I have 16... and for the last 4 months or so only about four of them were laying.. quite a few of them were molting.. even new ones from this last spring which I thought they don’t molt until their second year.. but it seems to me and Bob and Shad could probably tell me so.. but they seem to follow what the rest of the gals are doing even if it’s not what’s “suppose” to happen...? I have mostly different breeds and the ones that are the same are different colors so I can tell them apart .. and I do not add light.. here are some..View attachment 1997261View attachment 1997262View attachment 1997263View attachment 1997264View attachment 1997266View attachment 1997267View attachment 1997268View attachment 1997269

Hens can molt year 1. Both Maleficent and Aurora molted this year and they were around 6 to 8 months old. I have never had that happen before but these 2 definately did.

Those are fabulous pictures of your hens! I especially love the flexibility of this young lady.

Yes, I was quite surprised to see them! We have a feral lemon tree next to the house (known as bush lemons in Oz) and when I saw the avocados I thought they were lemons initially! Then I realised they were too far down the path to be lemons and that they were avocados! Hubby and I keep banging our heads on a low-hanging one, can’t wait to pick that one! ;) When I looked today, that’s when I saw heaps of them and decided to take a photo.
I do like a tuna and avocado bake.:)

I couldn't even start to identify all the breeds but they are a lovely looking bunch.
When did you teach them to read by the way. Love the feed sign.:D

I thought maybe I'd use a coop build article to track progress for anyone who's interested.
That would be fun to follow. :caf We'll be building one this spring too, and I'm definitely going to have a progress thread. I want to get feedback and correct any oversights while we are building instead of afterward. :clap
