Please let me know how it goes with your littles. Temperature and wind conditions. Your experience will be vital to my decision about mine. Please and thank you. :bow
So far so good, and I've went out and peeked in on them 3 times. Temp should not get below 40, and no wind. Last check they were all snuggled up in their hay nest sound asleep. And just because I'm paranoid, and it fit, I draped the horse blanket over the dog house for added insulation. They are ready to stay outside....I'm not.

It's Chickmas Eve again. So I thought I might share my prior experience with chickens.

We got 25 eggs from a relatives flock to hatch and return. Out of 25 only 6 hatched. They were all Barred Plymouth Rock mixes. We had one rooster and five hens who we kept for around a month.

Moontip was the oldest and the rooster. He was very docile and had puffy cheek muffs and was my favorite. I taught him how to walk briefly on a cylindrical object and he loved mealworms.

Next born was Shadowball who I taught to jump from high heights.

Nightstar was named after a peculiar yellow dot on her head as a chick. She had the yellowest legs out of all of them, making me think that she was the closest to being pure. Nightstar didn't like mealworms for some reason, choice of taste I suppose.

Spinner, the fourth, was born with her navel stuck to the egg shell. As she struggled to get free she would spin around on the floor, hence her name. Despite the issue at birth she survived to four weeks to my knowledge.

Cloud was next. Not much to say about her except she was a slightly lighter shade of black than the others.

Shade was the last to hatch and thus was pretty small.View attachment 2579621View attachment 2579623View attachment 2579625
They are amazingly cute. I am starting to love these zebra chickens! 🥰

Bad girl. Others would have gotten more than her. Nasty.
My reaction to having a chicken hanging off my finger was to drop the pot (it really did hurt quite a lot!).
But she didn’t notice and she hung on.
So most of the blueberries were gone by the time she got back to the ground.
Karma I guess!

Well tonight is the night. If the temps stay where they should the boys are spending their first night outside. They are over 5 weeks old, been off the heat lamp for a week and a half and spending the majority of their days outside. The dog house is cozy, bedded with sawdust plus a "nest" of hay yet I feel guilty for kicking them out. It is time though, no matter how many times I clean their cage it is STINKY again within a hour. More importantly going to miss them. Will be the first time in 7 weeks that I will not hear the sound of chicks peeping in my room. I'm leaving the brooder set up just incase the temp does drop unexpectedly.
Awww. It is so hard to be a chicken parent. They will be ok. :hugs:hugs

It’s difficult having separation anxiety! :hugs
