@BY Bob, @CrazyChookChookLady did the brood X cicadas emerge by you yet? I gather they are up and about but I don't seem to have any. I admit I am a bit disappointed, I was looking forward to the chicken-fun.

Nothing here yet but the ground is just now getting to temp. I am going for some free chicken food myself.

That feather line on her neck is quite striking.

It seems today is not Ruby’s day to leave us. This morning she came out of the coop with everyone else. She was a little groggy and blinking a lot, but I followed her around with a watering can and kept making little puddles of water, since that’s the only place she would drink. But she did drink! She wouldn’t touch dry feed, wet feed, her favorite treats, or even scratch. However, she’s digging in the yard and appears to be eating something. She might tire her self out by burning a bunch of calories digging but not eating, or maybe she’s finding what she needs. Regardless, it’s still on her terms.

I forgot to mention that for some of the water, I put in some dextrose and a little salt and potassium citrate, like a dilute, homemade electrolyte solution with quick acting sugar. I figured if I could get her blood sugar up a little bit, it might spark her appetite. Here she is acting completely normal. Bob, you were right about good and bad days. But a living being can only go so long without nutrients.

This is exactly how Digger died last year. I let it be completely on her terms.

Finally one day she went out with the flock and found herself a little spot under the daylillies and she slowly passed away. She was quiet and content. The flock would come by occasionally but no one bothered her.

I hope Ruby had a peaceful passing when it is time.

My dear Patsy was like that. With the tribe just slower right to the end. Then she passed in my arms. There were flies crawling on her and I could not let her go with them harassing her. It was beautiful in a way.
