So we have a dilemma.
We want and perhaps even need more chickens. We have two hens that regularly go broody, Alinta seems to be heading into round two already this year.
Our original plan was always to give Rosie chicks when the time came to get more chickens.
This year however when both went broody at the same time our sweet shy bottom of the pack Brenna decided she had had enough of being the bottom. Then everyone was up again and Rosie quickly resumed her place as head hen, unfortunately she also decided to become a bully. She chases both the others off anything she thinks might be too good. Alinta the previous bully now gets it from both of them.
So now I worry about giving Rosie chicks, will she be aggressive with them or on the other hand overly protective. Do we let Alinta have chicks? I never saw her as nurturing, but she is a determined sitter. My crazy brain is thinking about getting them each one, if they go broody together again, but that's really crazy right?...

You ready to raise even more chickens? 🐓

Judge me if you want, but it’s still very hot here , and I went to the barn/coop to check on the chooks. Saw Jaffar panting too, so I brought him inside with me for the night. Both of us will be asleep soon (I think Jaffar already is) but there is a plus to all of this, instant alarm clock at 0:500 pst tomorrow! Goodnight BYC
No judgement here. :hugs

Very sorry, I haven’t been on BYC lately. It’s been a very busy and hot week. Several fires have happened. Even 1/4 of my little Main Street in town, burned down to the ground, (including my friends store, where Emma came from) Difficult times here lately. I will probably never catch up on this thread. :old :th
I am sorry to hear this. I hope things get better in your town.

Thanks for asking. She seems fine. Eating well. Running to me when I come outside. Soft crop and clean vent though I did clean off some crustiness on the fluffy butt.

How do you check the soles of their feet? I had a feel and they were soft and cool, no hot spots, but I couldn't figure out how to look at the base. :idunno

She is roosting on the perch tonight.

"Anything to eat in there?"

The way I check the bottoms of their feet is by holding them like a football with their face under my armpit. I grasp their legs with the hand on the arm holding the football, leaving my other arm free to inspect feet, part feathers, trim, etc.
