Some people have no conscience.
I don't know what it is such people lack. It's not even the leaving them in the woods, it's that more often then not these dumped chickens have never free ranged and have no idea about the environment they have around them.
You could probably leave the bantams here in the woods and provided they could find good forage they have the potential to start a colony and survive. The Marans here not really. Strangely the second generation half bantam half Marans would probly fare reasonably well to.
The last rescue was a Catalan hen. I don't think she had ever flown until she got here.:(
I watched her first flight. It was only a leap off the rockery wall, less than two metres high.
The landing was very untidy, but she didn't fall over and looked very surprised with herself.
She went off muttering and clucking.

I think it's the Western 'what's in it for me?' materialistic, individualistic attitude. If I don't get anything out of it then why should I bother? Well I do get something out of it, I get companionship from of a wonderful animal.

This Donk, daughter of Dink, granddaughter of Cheepy and mother of Knock. She's a pro tree hugger. I took her mother (Dink) out of a tree at dusk for a bit over five years. She would go into the coop if it was raining, snowing or very high winds and strangely, a couple of nights before she planned to sit.
You can divert Donk and she will go in. But, if you don't shut her in she has this habit of slipping back out while your getting the others to roost. I have never managed to catch or handle Donk during the day and she holds the record for longest and highest flight. She has launched herself from the edge of the sheep field bank and flown right over the main house and down to the donkey field, some 250 metres.

She looks like she'll let you get close enough for a photo though. Pretty girl!

I think my favourite photo of yours is of the three pullets sitting in your IKEA chair. :love

What a great video. They sure love their pasta! Mine are like that with rice. I can't wait for Chicken Palace construction to be over so I can get in and get pictures of my Princesses. Right now they have access to the lovely run but I don't and I don't want to let them out to free range around the area even when I am there because the place is full of nails so I need the guys to finish before it is really safe.

My last rescue was a dumped in the woods job.:(
Wow. How on earth did you find her? I was going to ask where you all find your rescues. I am thinking ahead to expanding my flock I was looking for rescue opportunities but there is nothing within 100 miles of me and I have never met any chickens wandering free around here.
