I don't know what it is such people lack. It's not even the leaving them in the woods, it's that more often then not these dumped chickens have never free ranged and have no idea about the environment they have around them.Some people have no conscience.
You could probably leave the bantams here in the woods and provided they could find good forage they have the potential to start a colony and survive. The Marans here not really. Strangely the second generation half bantam half Marans would probly fare reasonably well to.
The last rescue was a Catalan hen. I don't think she had ever flown until she got here.

I watched her first flight. It was only a leap off the rockery wall, less than two metres high.
The landing was very untidy, but she didn't fall over and looked very surprised with herself.
She went off muttering and clucking.
