I just finished with BoPeeps. She seemed to snap out of it. But, Shenandoah and Xzit are in the coop sitting on eggs now. Two under Shanny, and one under Xzit. I worry about that, because it’s too hot in there at this time of day. Temperature here is 100f.

I’m sick of chasing broodies. Shenandoah is in the coop still, but I took out Xzit and brought her in the house for a movie and some corn

Hi everyone, just checking in. I'm sorry I'm late but happy belated birthday Alex. My sister is on the mend finally but I tested positive today. Tuesday evening started feeling like a sinus infection was coming on and honestly that is what it feels like I have. A sinus infection from hades. I'm fully vaccinated and have been since April so hopefully it keeps it at a sinus infection type situation. I have no fever thankfully but my blood sugar levels are slightly elevated, not dangerous though yet. That is going to be the tricky part as of right now, because my doctor insisted I start steroids before it got to my lungs so prescribed a prednisone pack. I know from experience that steroids makes my levels go stupid, so instead of taking them like normal he wants me to only take 2 a day for a week. That way hopefully while it will increase my blood sugars somewhat it wont send me into the 500 plus range which will require hospitalization. Right now they are hovering at 180 to 200 but I'm crossing everything possible that I can manage to keep them below 350. Everyone else in the house is fine so far and are supposed to come off of quarantine next Wednesday, but we will have to see if that gets extended now with my positive result.

I’m just going to take one example of this nonsense and that’s the idea that roosters dance for their hens and the purpose of this is to entice the hens to mate with them. It would have helped a little if the women in the video could differentiate between a cockerel and a cock or rooster….nvm.

In all the years of watching chickens I have never, and I mean never, seen a rooster and hen mate after the rooster, or cockerel has done this “dance”. I mean not once, never, zilch, zero, nil, times. It would be reasonable to expect to see mating after the dance if that was it’s purpose say 50% of the time even for a rooster who was a crap dancer wouldn’t it? I suppose I could have watched lots of roosters who couldn’t dance well enough, or perhaps all the hens had headaches. Come on. Evidence. Where is her evidence for this assertion? She’s got a good clip of a rooster trying to mate with a hen who wasn’t interested didn’t she. The rooster chased the hen round the garden ffs. Maybe he should have done a dance!

This so called dance is for herding the hens. A show of dominance if we must use that word.

I’m sure the women is a very nice caring person and all that, but she doesn’t know shite about chickens.

There was another point the lady made, caught my attention as I had never heard it before, that the escort song after laying was to draw other hens to lay their eggs at that same site. That strikes me as really odd, given the stories about how secretive hens who go broody are with their nest sites.

As I’ve mentioned to Shad before, both Bridge (alpha) and Lucky (middle ranked) have given me a subtle wing. They really just drop the shoulder. Interestingly, they’re a couple of my strongest lap sitters. And Bridge has done it after calling me over, when I approach. I’m not sure what to make of it, as I’m not a chicken, but they seem to sometimes communicate with me as such.

It kind of looks like an American football offensive lineman stance. There's probably a rugby analogy too. Putting the shoulder into it, but really it's the foot up that's more of a threat?

Congratulations! We also have a RIR named Peanut (or Peeny Penny, yes most of my chickens got multiple names) (who should be laying soon since that Butter, who is guessed to be the same age as Buttercup, who, has laid her very first egg just a few days ago), but she's not laying yet.

Well, folks… Ruby continues to respond well to tubing. However, her hormones have already returned and she’s quite swollen. I’ll likely have her euthanized soon, as she did not tolerate the last two drainings very well and I don’t think I’ll put her through that again. As of today, she seems happy with good body language and vocalizations, but I’m bracing myself.
