Came home from work today, having had a good day. found pullets (and cockerel) up near the house. Closer than normal, but they've been working their way closer. Got pasta treat. They came back up in a hurry. then saw 1 off in the yard, not moving. Go check it out.....Dead Nika, my Dominique. no obvious signs of cause, but cold. Looking around, see Sheba, my RIR, also a corpse. See little Storm, running around (NOT a corpse), where's mama? Keep looking. Find corpse of the double laced golden wyandotte, followed by Dora (the pic posted earlier). Have seen Silver and a partridge rock....not sure if Mama or not, but not near Storm. Find Mama on other side of Russian olives, also a corpse (definitely mama as her comb is smaller than the 2IC's comb. Then spot Rusty on the track down below. Feathers everywhere thigh plucked. Finally (after talking with nearest neighbors (1 of whom also has chickens)), find Thing 1, the smart Houdan, torn open. Never did find Helen, my silver Phoenix. Based upon all the senseless killing and the size difference between Rusty and Helen, the smallest, I'm thinking a dog. I need a fence. RIP feathered friends.

Of the birds in pictures, I still have little Storm in #4, and the barred bird in the pic around the feeder. I also have the 2 with just tails showing. I took the pic of Rusty on Sunday. View attachment 2810449
No one saw/heard anything so don't know if it was someone's pet or a stray. One of the neighbors did see a stray the other day. The foxes back in May I understand. feeding family. This is senseless.
Oh no, oh no! I an so very sorry for your tremendous loss!!! 💔

I remember when you changed her name to Raven. Such beautiful birds
I tend to try not to change names, but Rosie was right and Raven is a perfect fit for her. Everything on her is black even her skin. I expected that from the silkies but not from a maran's mix. If they don't cancel trick or treating this year Rosie has decided that she wants to dress up and hand out candy. She want's to be Maleficent and have Raven with her as part of the costume.

Hey now, don't make fun of Folger's. I started sneaking drinks of coffee when I was around 5 years old from my grandpa. He drank Folgers, my mom and dad drink Folgers. To me there is nothing better then Folger's classic roast. And as far as using the empty cans as grain buckets, did you know that a 270 cup size Folgers can holds the same amount as a grain scoop. It is easier and cheaper to keep a handful of empty coffee cans on hand to feed everyone out of. And my chickens know what that "red bucket" means and will mob you when they see you walking out with it.
Easy, easy there my friend. If you want Colombian coffee, I will go fly and get you the fresh stuff. I do actually have some here, fresh from Columbia (nothing better)! :D

Raven is a perfect name! Have some coffee, and think about that!

That must have been a horrible shock :(
I'm sad too read of your loss

I made steak and eggs for lunch. I think that I do honestly fry too much steak, just so I can give it to my feathered friends. (They go crazy for my steaks) here’s the math: neighbor gives me meat, I give him eggs, (lots of eggs) I get too much steak, so I share them with the chooks, and they give me even more eggs. Algebra? Or quantum physics ?

I do not expect nothing less from Butter. It is such a normal thing for her. The princess is too good to eat from the ground or a communal treat bowl. No matter what the snack she takes hers in her own way. If its raisins she must get them directly from the box or bag. Buns, she prefers to tear her own pieces from the bun, not have it tore up and tossed. Today she was only picking the whole corn from the bucket and trying to toss the rest.
Daisy, the greatest hen ever, used to pick through a snack mix I had for them. Watch her throw out the other items and only eat the meal worms in her dessert bowl.

A few more pictures from this morning. Raven and Creamy were debating if it would be worth trying to share Butter's Bucket, but thought better of it. Raven is jet black, but under the right light she is green. I also got some pictures of Momma hen's gang. Other then color and some of them having feathered feet, they appear to take more after their game heritage then the Marans side. Momma is still hanging on tight to them even though they are as big as she is.

That would be just awesome. What a great Costume! She is my favorite.
