Oh, and I must say... people say Leghorns are flighty and unfriendly. Um... NO. I’ve had a pure Leghorn and a Leghorn mix. They aren’t flighty; they’re ALERT. They’re also super friendly, curious, BOSSY and smart. Would make another great addition to your flock and might become the alpha, eventually.

I am a huge leghorn fan! Very smart, very curious. Great birds.

Maggie bleeding - need advice
:eek:Dear chicken-ey friends I could use your advice. Tonight Maggie had blood dripping from her wattles.
I don't think it is a life threatening injury but it is dripping. I noticed it when locking them up for the night. Nobody is pecking her so for now I have decided to leave her be and will check on her later in the night.
I noticed that she seems to be itchy around the wattles and she has been scratching herself (her toes are blood stained as a result). I wonder if the injury is actually self inflicted by scratching (I had a cat do that once).
Any ideas on what I should do? Both tonight/in the morning in a first aid sense and to figure why she is itching? Otherwise she has been fine all day scratching in the leaf pile with everyone else. And nobody else is itchy.
Courtesy of the new camera (thank you @BY Bob for the inspiration!) you can see them settled for the night and Maggie scratching her face.
Help!
Check her for ear mites while you're at it. You'll need a magnifying glass.

Ok, I’m going to be brutally honest, since I’ve had two glasses of wine.
The Polish is very likely to get bullied by the existing flock. There’s the crest (like bangs that blind her) and the vaulted skull (subject to brain damage if pecked) to deal with. It’s like the polish is taking one for the team so the barred rock can integrate, too. I’m only on my second barred rock, but my first one, Bridge, who is top hen and the only one remaining from my original flock, is the coolest chicken. So calm and confident. I think you need one. So my vote is yes; take both. Of course, I’m totally generalizing and each hen has her own personality.
Do you have a way to quarantine?
What she said.
Probably not what you want to read Bob but now would be a good time to exercise a bit of self control.
I wouldn't keep any ornamental breeds with your current flock.
There, I've been responsible.:)
