Silkies are still not my thing but I have to admit they are cute.
Thank you. I completely understand and just a few short months ago I would have said they were not mine either, and never would be. But their little personalities have won me over, I can see why people who love silkies, truely love them. I mean, what other chicken will sit in your lap and let you brush them with a comb?

I understand them winning your heart. These crazy Polish of my wife's have done the same to me.

So I have a job ahead of me.
I got to thinking about Belle going to sleep in the nest box last night.
This morning when I was cleaning out the poop I saw there was about 10 fluff feathers in there.
She is too young for a moult so I had an inkling about something else and I had a look through the shavings under the roosting area and sure enough found a few of these:

I’ve never dealt with pests before but guessing it’s a mite?
So I pulled everything out and high pressure hosed it all. It’s now drying.
Also got some dust.
Having never done it, do I cover everything in the coop with it once dry? (Roof inside etc also?)Do I then put new bedding in and dust that too?
I haven’t checked the girls yet but was going to dust them too. Any tips or tricks for doing so?areas to get?

Got this too, thought it might be easier to get it on the girls in the right spots

It could be, but it looks too big too me. The mites I deal with are like specks, a paper I read called them crawling pepper, but even that is generous in my view. You can see them, but only if they are moving would you know they are alive.

DH wanted silkies initially but as they go broody at the drop of a hat, I’m glad we didn’t get any.

Hmmm, ok.
I checked both of them and could see no critters anywhere in their feathers/ on their skin. I figured with Snow being white anything would stand out. I’ll try to check again at night.
Dusted coop and bedding just to be safe, there were more in the shavings when I tipped them out into the bin, so whatever they are hopefully the dust will do the job.
I’ll see where Belle goes to sleep tonight.

Yes, Phyllis does exactly the same thing at night.

Her head droops

She shakes herself awake

Her head droops again, a little further.

She shakes herself awake

Her head droops further each time and she keeps shaking herself awake each time until she finally tucks it in. It's adorable. 🥰
Must be a Polish thing. 🤩
