Well, like @bgmathteach said, it releases the air and then the shell doesn't crack.

So you have to prick it carefully, you want to make a hole in the shell but not in the membrane. Then you can have the water boiling like crazy as you gently place the egg in, I like to go point first, but I've been told it doesn't matter. Set the timer to 3.5 minutes (if you're me). Watch the bubbles of air escaping from the shell. Think of Dad. Time's up! Remove the egg and serve it (Eg with Vegemite soldiers).

You'll still get one crack every now and then, but not as often.
Does it make them any easier to peel?

I used to do that. Now I start with cold water and don't need to prick the egg.

NOT a meadowlark. That V shape is too distinctive and this bird was bigger. This was a ring like that of a pheasant (size permitting), black, with white/grey and yellow above/below. Meadowlarks are the state bird and we get them in the yard all summer long, along with mountain bluebirds. The yellow was on the head, but the breast was light too. Tail was dark and so were the wings. Flickers around here tend to be red shafted. Also get downy woodpeckers, but not those either. Size is right for either of those. Going to keep my eyes peeled coming home today. Maybe I can spot it again. Audubon app is not helping. Can't put the ring on the bird, keeps popping up barn swallow which this is NOT.
A Killdeer? Doesn't really have yellow on it but it's that's the right size, and they do swoop around.
