Would she meet you part way? Are there breeders across state lines that are geographically closer to you?So I've found a silkie breeder, who has all colors of silkies, nice ones I may add that has pullets available. Including both Buff and Red which I really want now. The downside, they are on the opposite end of the state, and according to google maps about 8 hours one way. As much as I want one I cannot justify driving 16 hours for 1 pullet dangit.
With his punniness, don't give him any ideas!Could then be 'Mrs-Hippie'![]()
The hen is gorgeous.
Now, they just won’t leave!Arizona and Dakota, when they first came home to be with me. View attachment 2941606
It really is suprising just how much difference getting on grass and natural ground makes to their health. I've had deep reservations about this commercial feed only diet for years and watching the difference being able to forage has made to the Ex Batts leaves no doubt. Finding which greens can replace what they would forage in a particular environment might take some doing.Thank you. Very helpful.
Maggie’s balance fright has made me more observant about food. I should have spotted that much less commercial food was being consumed (from now on I will make a note of when I restock).
What I have noticed is that right now they are desperate for greens (though we disagree on defining leek tops as green!). Fortunately there is still grass around and I can always buy a cabbage, but I think I need to start growing green shoots for them in the winter.
I could do little sprouts continuously and do a batch in soil on the window sill.

I would put her in with the others.Hi people. So Bridge put herself to roost in the sunroom, which is really outside the coop (it has a roof and one wall, but three walls are hardware cloth. They are currently wrapped in plastic.)
Do I let her stay there? More rain is coming AND it’s going to dip below 40°F tonight. I’m wondering if she trapped herself in there with her sore leg and didn’t want to jump down (she’s on the upper roost in there). But when I shone a light outside, she looked pretty content and even preened a bit. It would make sense in summer, but in winter???
