Apparently that was so due to some religious thingy ~ like hares. I'd never heard of it but have checked & apparently 'twas so.
Yes, the book i am reading is a serious history book. I am sure there will be some different theories particularly for the very ancient but I don’t think the author is making stuff up. It was different on the continent of Europe as the Romans are them.

Question: what does everyone use for grit. Now that everything is buried in snow I need a source for them. They had access to my limestone screenings until yesterday! Now there is no gravel etc for them to source grit.
You still have young chickens, like chicks? I don't remember how old yours are. They need a smaller grit made for chicks until about 8 weeks. There are small bits in regular grit but the chick grit is all very small

I use the Manna Pro with probiotics, you can get it at Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Manna-Pro-10...6?keywords=Chicken+grit&qid=1642592339&sr=8-6

I've noticed they seem like the coating on it, if it gets washed off they still eat it but they go right for it when I freshen the cup, sorting through it with a lot of interest, more than when I just rustle the old contents around. Maybe because they look for a certain size, that's gone? The same way they go through soil or our shale driveway, picking out what they want for grit.

You can serve it in separate containers or scatter a bunch on the ground where they like to forage and it doesn't get snow.

My Princesses really do test my emotional fortitude.
This morning I did not see Maggie emerge on the coop cams.
You have to understand two things: (i) I live with a constant dread that Maggie will drop down dead; and (ii) the driveway between my house and the Chicken Palace (well basically all around the house) is one large ice-rink - we got enough sun to melt the surface but not enough for it to drain away or soak in - beautiful but deadly.
So, convinced that Maggie has died in the night I risk life and limb to make it out to the Chicken Palace. Just as I am traversing the scary steep icy slope who should start yelling at me? Maggie of course. She evaded all the cameras and had been out in the pasture run all along!
:love

As I was nearly all the way to the Chicken Palace I decided to go in and sit down and let the ladies calm me down before I dared undertake the return journey.
Once inside I discover that Dotty has chosen this week - where we have had some of the coldest temperatures in 3 years - to start her molt. She looks a mess and there are Dotty fluff feathers everywhere.
:barnie

In good news (I guess) Minnie laid me a perfect, and perfectly tiny, egg which I will have for my breakfast.

Call your neighbors, instead of asking for a cup of sugar ask for some grit!
If you have a quarry near you, that's a possibility.
Last resort, get out the pickax and dig where they used to get their grit.
Yep I plan to dig up my screenings pile today as its above freezing! This time I will fill a bucket and have it in the barn.
