I'm soo sorry you lost your boy Roostie. I have a huge soft spot for Marans, especially Marans Roosters and he was a beauty. 12+ years is a really long life especially for a Rooster. You did very well by him and you should be proud of the care he received.
Thank you. I’m glad we had him, he was amazing. But he did have a very loud crow

The Cochin girls were not thrilled with me this morning. Between yesterday afternoon and early this morning we got about a inch of snow. When I put everyone to bed last night there was 1/2 inch on the ground. They happily marched through the snow to the coop no problems. This morning it was a whole different story. First thing when I went out to feed I opened their coop door and proceeded to feed the horses. 10 minutes later when everyone is fed I start counting the chickens to make sure everyone is there for breakfast. Everyone is present and accounted for except the cochins. Poppy was even playing around and hopping in the snow. I go back to the coop and what do I see, 6 very indignant girls squawking at me insulted that they should have to walk in the white stuff. Sorry girls, if even tiny Poppy can walk in the snow I'm not shoveling a path this morning. So I get behind them and shoo them out of the coop. That insulted them even further and instead of walk like everyone else, they hopped/flew to the stalls. They then spent a good hour this morning loudly complaining, it is a very good thing we do not understand chickens. I'm sure they were calling me every name under the sun this morning.

Oh yes, my Cochins did that too

It must be so hard! I managed to never candle Sydney's eggs when she hatched last time. It took all of my willpower to not look.
I will have to candle these, the last thing I need is for a bad egg to explode in the incubator. The smell was terrible when one exploded under Holly last fall and it took a week to get the smell off her feathers that I fear I would never get it out of the incubator.

Cats always look like drowned rats when you wash them 😁

Mine got sprayed by a skunk last Summer, three washings to get rid of the smell and she is long haired. Afterwards her coat was amazingly soft and silky tempting me to wash her weekly hahaha.
