Ok Fluffy Butt peeps, I'm in trouble now. I have a lone chick. The 3rd egg looks like it quit around day 17 or 18. I've already called Tractor Supply and Rural king. Neither one has chicks right now. Tractor Supply will get theirs in next Thursday. There was one more local feed store that used to carry chicks so I called them. They no longer carry chicks, they claimed they could not compete with Tractor Supply and Rural king. I've got it in the brooder, it ate and drink a little but it needs a friend now.
Is there another person who raises chickens who might have a chick right now? How far would you go to get one? There is a breeder I know of in Ohio who might have some.

Mount Healthy hatchery in Cincinnati will have chicks available on the 23rd. They will have Marans if that helps. That is a long time though but it is better than nothing.

while you figure it out I read you should give her a mirror and a cuddly toy for company
No idea if that truly helps but thought I would pass it along. Can’t hurt.

I gave her a small cuddle buddy. I've already resorted back to the heat lamp. I tried using my eco glow, but it did not feel like after 30 minutes it got very warm and she was visibly shaking. I've left it plugged up and will periodically throughout the day feel underneath it. I may have to send it back. While I try and figure out my options I have put the word out to my facebook chicken buddies to see if anyone has young chicks. To either see if they would part with one or want to take on a extra one. If I keep her and she has to be a solo chick, this will be one very spoiled silkie.

Your budgeting troubles remind me of a saying from "The Secret Garden"
"I've got four places to put every penny.."

I'm not sure I follow about the smoking though. Are you saying that your Mum smokes and has been smoking more since getting someone to smoke with? At first I was thinking someone was making her buy packs of cigarettes for them! I thought "That's a bit rude!" :gig
If it makes you feel any better, I just looked up the cost of cigarettes in Australia at the moment:

"Here are the latest cigarette prices in Australia: a packet of 20 cigarettes costs $23.86. a packet of 25 cigarettes costs $29.48. a packet of 30 cigarettes costs $38.11.31 Jan 2019

Cigarette Prices in Australia in 2022"

At those prices, I’d be rolling eucalyptus leaves! :old:eek:

I whole heartedly agree! I suspect it is 2 thiings: 1) cats will kill song birds by people's feeders, so it is visible/obvious, and 2) Cats will play with their food. My cat would catch a chipmunk and would take it to what I called her 'racquet ball court.' A wooden box next to the house (about 12-16 inches between wooden box side & house ) She would throw it up high against the wall and watch it ping-pong down between the 2 'walls'...when she was done playing, she would bite the head...and leave the rest on the door step for us. (what a lovely gift!)

She would come back and eat what was left if I didn't 'remove' her offering.

Sorry the pic is so dark...it's another 'forgot to turn off the game cam when I take care of the chookies' one.
I was worried about my cat and the chickies but Roxanne put the run on her one day and she has never stepped foot towards the barn since!!

Hubs just sent me this, so sharing. :D
