...and just like that winter again. Tired of cold fingers!!

Everyone is grumpy, horses, chickens - me.... It's -10c and dropping.

I took advantage of a sunny break and checked the geegees...

Getting cold again here - it will get to similar temperatures at night but be a bit warmer during the day over the next couple of days.

Thanks! You are a good one for breed knowledge for sure!
Yes, and no. Playing what breed of chicken is this? on 14 chicks with only 2 breeds duplicated and trying to figure out storm's color and crest has helped, but it's also made me aware of how much I don't know, especially about breeds I've with which I've had no contact. I do tend to research stuff I'm interested in....to the point I'm known at work as a crazy chicken lady.

Ok, I must be remembering wrong.
Here is Little Mill at about 18-ish days old.

Interestingly, Ruby, my late Buckeye, also had subtle spangles at that age.

Nice to see what they're going to look like next week! I seem to recall spangles on my partridge rocks too, until their juvenile moult.....wonder if it's something like a fawn's spots...

A update on my grandmother. Her stubbornness is driving us up the wall but it is ok. Everyone is right it is better for her to be stubborn. We have 2 dr appointments in 2 weeks and we will know a lot more then. What we do know now is the MRI showed narrowing and partial blockages to the vessels on her brain. There is nothing they can do for that but start her on blood thinners. They also confirmed either dementia or early onset Alzheimer's. She says she is going home but the hard truth is she cannot live by herself any longer. It is either with us or a nursing home which as long as possible will never happen. One bright spot is she keeps asking all kinds of questions about my incubator and how does it work. Well, I need them like I need a hole in my head but she wants to see chicks hatch. Mom told her fine, she had to complete 4 weeks of in home physical therapy here anyway that Monday she would have me set every egg I had collected and I would teach her how to use it. In 2 days I've gotten 22 hatchable eggs and have not collected yet this morning. For the moment that has stopped her saying she has to go home.
If a therapy chicken is necessary, start working with the chicks and expect a house chicken out of it. If it draws her into wanting to work with the birds outside, :wee
:wee :wee :wee :ya:ya:he:bow:bow:bow:clap:clap:celebrate:celebrateI'd call it a huge win and start planning on housing/rehoming a lot of birds!

A formal introduction: Bella
Bella for beautiful or maybe for belladonna. My black cat is called Nightshade; maybe they will become friends.
She has pink toes at the end of her black legs and white flashes under her black wings. When she is grown I believe she will be all black.
She likes to stretch out her toes and flap her wings, but hasn’t yet learned to take off.
She is an absolute pig and eats all the time.
She is not a Jersey Giant or a black Orpington. Nor is she a Sapphire Gem (had to look that one up). Unfortunately a clean-legged Marans requires a major road trip to visit @RebeccaBoyd (maybe next year).
Bella is a cross between an Ameraucana and a Marans which I believe makes her an Olive Egger. Well done @bgmathteach!
Of course, that is all just what I believe - we will learn more as she grows. Meanwhile, please welcome Bella to our collective global tribe.

Energetic describes most when they're awake. You're likely right on the all black, although she may show some sort color bleed, especially throat, shoulders, and or head. If she does, it likely won't show until her juvenile moult. The olive eggs are striking. She's darling and will likely be a unique beauty as an adult, too.

I have a human teenager, wow, it is so hard to say that. I'm blessed to say that while we have our moments for the most part I seem to be doing my job right. She is a caring respectful young lady who is focused on her grades and her animals. I'm really going to want to cry and feel old come May when I have to say I have officially a high schooler.
I had 2 teenage girls at the same and they were a handful at the time but they turned out pretty good. I am very proud of them now but often joked that I thought none of us would survive those years. Lol
