I have been working on the fence and gate today. But the chickens are not very happy about it. I think that they know full well, that it’s designed to keep them in, and away from the main gate. I don’t know what their complaints are, they still have run of most of the yard. Off to town tomorrow for cement and wire fencing. (And a few other items) :old:idunno

You can do my fences when you're done 😊

I fear that as we enter our second week together my life with the Hooligans is entering an unfortunate new phase.

I was woken this morning by cries of distress. They are not based in my bedroom so to wake me from another room behind closed doors is LOUD.
This was not ‘peep peep’. This was ‘I am being murdered and need rescuing now’.

As I scramble to wake up and to untangle myself from bed my mind is racing. Did I not shut the door properly allowing a cat to get in? But even if a cat got in how would it get to the babies they are secure in their pop up tent? Did something fall over and crush them? Did the heater plate catch fire?
I get in there and it is Bernadette making all the noise. And why? Because the other two were crowded in the food bowl and in the pitch dark she couldn’t see how to get in.
When I turned on the light she saw an opening and squeezed in. And peace reigned in the land of the Hooligans.
Is it normal for them to be chowing down so much in the dark? I know Hattie has midnight snacks and mine often get up well before light to have pre-breakfast or to lay an egg, but I thought they were generally supposed to wake at dawn. There is no artificial light on in there at night.
Hooligans.

Welcome to parenthood.
Welcome to Hoo-ville! 🥰 :hugs

Goats too! Arduinna would wake me two or three times every night to feed. I miss having her sleep in the bedroom, but I don’t miss the chaos and mayhem of her trying to eat everything in the trailer when she was almost 1 (and I mean everything, edible or not, down to the vinyl wallpaper… she had a glue problem 😆)

If it’s super dark you could leave a low light in for them, it might help… I agree on maybe trying to reorient the dish.

I agree make a bit more space there and give them a very low light. The Buckeyes were in the bathroom adjacent our bedroom, door open, and it has two big windows so when there was any moonlight that would come through. You could put a red / orange plug-in nightlight somewhere. Every now and then I would hear the Buckeyes move about at night and peck the food dish. If I got up to use the bathroom they would peep really softly to me from under the warm shelter and they might come out. I loved their company! It was a straight shot from the warm cave to the food with no obstacles, but it wasn't right next to them and doesn't have to be if they have a low light.

@LozzyR has been competing with me on my own thread for some time.:lau I don't care. I love feather dusters of all shapes & sizes!
Feather-dusters galore! :wee
