I usually try to listen to the chickens butt in the evening… if it’s peeping there might be chicks under there. I have to be careful because not all my eggs are fertile and there few things worse than a rotten one exploding on mom, the hatching fluffs, and any other good but slightly behind eggs. 🤮
She keeps her butt to the wall, leaving the noisy/bitey end out. As of this evening, she has at least 1. Now I'm REALLY not going to disturb her. Mess with brand new mamas at your peril! Next step: how good a mama will she be?

🤗

Ya I don't get the rationale regarding not liking the coloured eggs, people really have no idea where their food comes from!

Next it will be only have Hereford cattle for meat ☹️

I sometimes write the names of the hens who laid each egg so people have a connection to them.

I did that in the past. Now I have no idea whose are whose except Flash, who lays blue eggs.

I just set up my second girl… I think I got about a dozen eggs under her. Meat chickens are Large 😂 and I remembered why I called her Mean meat Mama… she didn’t manage to break my skin, but she was sure trying! Completely the opposite of my Bully girl, little fluffs mama. She jumps out of her nest every morning, Goldie won’t budge. I can peek under my Bully no problem and she lets me pick up her chicks, expects me to carry them out to the meat tractor for her… Goldie will draw blood… happily.

Ok… finally, Finally… FINALLY “my” geese have brought their babies! I was scrubbing away at some rusty stove parts with CLR for the free camper project and heard the chickens making a commotion but couldn’t spot the source of the “not serious” but concerned alarm. Then I spotted them. Normally we have goslings in March… so further proof of how messed up the weather is right now. Six teeny tiny babies they aren’t trusting me enough for good pics yet because the littles are so small, but they get bolder as their goslings mature. Last year they raised 4 successfully, two the year before that, they always hatch out six… View attachment 3088101I tried to offer them some chick starter, but they are still too wary at this stage so my chooks ended up feasting on it instead.View attachment 3088102
Awww… goslings! We have a pair of geese who nest on top of a shipping container at my work. Expecting goslings soon!
