Stuff them under in full darkness and hope for the best? Check in regularly and first thing in the morning? That’s how I usually give them extra babies, unless it’s one of my chick stealers, or the co-parents… but the mink got one of that pair of mamas (they couldn’t keep their chicks straight and it would vary who had how many and which throughout the day)
That's what I did Wed night. She started to freak out then decided they were all good yesterday morning. Had them all under her, was grooming one of the light ones. Came home from work, she's moved across the coop (like she did the other days). Had the 2 dark ones in close and the others were hiding in a corner. They had full crops, so they'd been with her most of the day and were just starting to get cold. She wouldn't let them back under her. What happened?

Well, looks like something happened mid afternoonish in the coop and Jess has rejected 3 or the chicks. They're back inside in the brooder. Things were good this morning, all under her, she's ok with it. This evening, she had her little under her, the other little dark next to her and the others weren't allowed near her. Unless anyone has some ideas on this, looks like 3 will be in the house for a bit. glad she has the 2 and as she's a first time mama, it's an adventure. What am I saying? It's always an adventure!
There is no telling why she rejected 3 of them. Disappointing but there is not much to do but raise them yourself.

A stumble or tetter is probably not a problem. What sent my girls feral was Sif face planting then flapping round madly. The Vorwerks in particular went into crazy attack mode. Your Bernadette will want to be with everyone else & will do everything possible to achieve that end. Do keep an eye on those toes. The curling is indicative that she still has an ongoing problem. When I had Sif going through this the Vet said neurological ~ which is problematic as there's nothing to be done about that ~ or stress induced. In her case it was delayed stress from the move. I did supplement vitamins to cover all my bases. I am trying to keep abreast of this girl as I understand completely how worrying it is & the Vets can't really help.
I think you are right. She doesn’t flaul around now. She can move around. And I agree on the toes. When it was her left leg they were so curled under she was getting abrasions on the tops. But so far her right foot hasn’t got that bad. In good news, it isn’t getting any worse so I think she will adapt. But it is why I am in a dither about making modifications inside for ‘furniture’.
At the moment she can’t perch (can’t grip with her toes and no strength around the hocks). But the perch in the brooder is just a little stick, and my guess is the big branch would be easier for her. But I’m not sure!

it is 630 am here and the coop complex is closed today. After they were locked in for 2 weeks I have left the complex open for a week so they could have all the free range they wanted. Well it is raining out today and Mrs BY Bob and I have no desire to sit in the rain all day and supervise them.

Betty beleives that this is unfair. She is walking around the coop bawking her head off angry that she is closed in. This is actually and effective strategy as I really don't want them disturbing the neighbors. However I know if I give in now I'm only going to encourage the behavior moving forward. It's a delicate line for certain.

Here she is with Phyllis chiming in, hoping to be released.

At least we aren't dealing with a lone chick like last year with (not so little any more) Storm. Her taking the one means that there's companionship there. The trio at least mean they have a group also. I could go get more of the chicks, but all told, this puts me at 22 birds. Space in the coop when they're adults is going to be on the tight side (extra warmth in winter). Next challenge: boy/girl ratio. I'm pretty sure the dark chipmunk is a bielefelder (auto-sexing) pullet (no head spot), but has a rose comb which puts daddy as the big BO x EE boss of the flock (I think), leaving the auto-sexing a bit up in the air. That's the only one with any sort of clue yet. I really need another cockerel out of these 5 just for escort duties with that many birds. At least that much I'll likely know within a month.

I am sure they enjoy your company. Most of my dogs and certain chickens hang out with me on the weekend when I spend time outside. I only put them up when they get too hot or I am using power tools because they always want to help
Yes, what is it with chickens and power tools? They are always in the way!

I use 2×2s or 2x4s long way. That way in the winter I know their toes are covered. A 2x4 long ways gives a nice flat surface for her to essentially stand on. No curling of the toes required. That is what my main roost is. Maybe that would help. You need to remember though, she will want to roost with everyone else, not alone. I might switch the roost in the brooder section first to see.

Nellie is louder and will go for an hour when her box of choice is occupied (where Jess went broody....both times). Blanche and PITA will also go off LOUD....PITA gets Cheetah to echo her and go running to do her bidding.

Mine are generally very quiet, however lately Sydney is back to signing the egg song. This has been happening since Lilly passed. I can't tell if the two are related but it seems like she is looking for an escort to the rest of the tribe. Syd is loud too. Very loud.

Not good… Aurora needs to get her stuff together and get the girls out of sight for Red Tails… they are BBB very, very BBB. They scare me more than the eagles.

The chickens have really been going off a lot lately because Geese, Goats, Ravens, and so forth… well, today I figured it was the geese. The first four times were the geese. No Ravens in sight, goats were too far away for the fuss. I’m looking out the window and no geese in sight and everyone is under cover. That’s odd even for the awful rain we were getting. Giant Juvenile Eagle perched on my gravel pile. Even the Geese were hiding out from him by the barn. I ran out in my slippers with no jacket in the pouring rain, chasing it and chucking rocks, and the Gander has decided, maybe I’m not half bad after all. He went after one idiot cockerel and scared off both my Ravens twice today, drank from the chickens waterer, and was looking at the coop as though he was half inclined to take it over.
Scary! I have not seen eagles here but I believe there are some who hang out at the reserve nearby.
