Thanks @BY Bob. That is a great insight into the so called egg song. One of my hens took on escort duties as we have no rooster & she would often wait in the coop till they were done as well. Makes way more sense than, I laid an egg; come get it!

The many ways in which hens in all female flocks pick up the rooster duties always fascinates me. Having had a rooster and seen Jabber at work I now recognize it more easily. Your hen preforming escort duty. Patsy growing spurs when she became alpha hen. It is amazing how these complex animals adapt.

What is going on?!

Last night we did not get home until 2:00 am. So I was permitted to sleep in this morning. However my flock, of whom I just yesterday praised for being so quiet, decided my life should be otherwise. I left the run doors open last night so they could free range while I slept in. I'm not sure if they decided they wanted me outside or what but at 8:00 am they simply went crazy.

My wife went out to shoosh them but they would have none of it. They would not calm down until I came out. I know it was not any egg song because the were no eggs but they were yelling. They were spread out too. One under the magnolia tree, one in the side yard, two on the deck.

BAKAWK!, BAKAWK!, BAKAWK!

back and forth. I checked everything and found no predators. Anything to make a liar or of me.

Boy I am tired now.......1 more hour would have been perfect.

Do any of yours try to roost in the Magnolia tree @BY Bob ?
There's a Magnolia tree close to the coops of tribe 2 and 3 and it's a favorite roost spot.

Maleficent keeps checking it out but not so far. I try to train them to the coop before I let them out to free range. I had horrible roosting issues with my Daisy because I did not. As a leghorn she could really fly and she loved to roost over the coop in the birch tree. A couple of times getting the ladder out in the dark taught me my lesson. No free ranging until you reliably coop roost or I must be out with you to "guide" you to the proper roosting location. Maleficent is my curious one. She has tried run roosting recently. If someone decides to try it, it will be her. The magnolia would be a fabulous roost for them. I see her looking at it all the time.
