Broodies are a pain but no big deal ~ as a rule. I did lose a BR to broodiness last year ~ mostly because the man was in charge while I was away & didn't realise what was happening, not that it would have helped if he had. He still wouldn't have known what to do.

I was constantly breaking her sister all summer but we had a really hot summer & she just kept overheating & then headed to the nesting box. I found keeping a frozen water bottle in there really discouraged her.
Hey, that sounds like a great idea!! I’ll have to remember that... if I mention broody.. please remind me :D

. I am constantly making small improvements whenever I see a possible vulnerability.

I think this is what is most important. Always be ready to tweak a poultry set up because its not ever going to remain perfect forever. Either wood rots or metal rusts or plastic cracks always something needs looking after. Chicken keeping is the epitome of adaptability.

Queen of the Hill

This morning's game at Fluffy Butt Acres was Queen of the Brushpile as Lilly led her squad up the hill. Yesterday's rain must have scared up some brush bugs.

Their efforts led to this fellow coming out of the pile to see what was going on.

It is actually one of my favorite things about chickens. It keeps me creative and my mind fresh. I just decided yesterday that I'm putting a couple of cement pavers in front of their run door for safety and mud remediation. Dual purpose, just like Hattie. ;)

It's funny; cats have the reputation as killers for fun and dogs do not. However I have seen and heard of this happening way too often. When a cat kills for fun it is one animal. A single dog can be devastating. They do not stop at one. Fox are the same as dogs to me. Just smarter ones.
Our government hates cats. They have a reputation for taking out the wildlife but in my experience it's dogs do the worst damage. We lost our wallaby population on our island due to the dogs hunting them. The ones we see occasionally now have swum over from the big island.

Yes, and you also never hear of a cat attacking and mauling a person to death or near death
