So not going to get on the soapbox... I swear. But yes, our only options should be humane and ethical handling and husbandry, and the costs associated with that, or vegetarianism. I’m 100% against cheap meat, factory farming, and huge feedlots. It’s disrespectful to the animals, devalues life, and is unsustainable, irresponsible, and not ethical. Just wrong.

Phew... I think that’s my shortest rant on the subject ever.

Preaching to the choir here Kris :D But I do love my meat...

I also laugh at all cage free eggs being brown? So white eggs are bad and good eggs are brown. What are green eggs?

Something that Bob does not have, that's what green eggs are!

Hi yall! I don’t mean to change the subject but wanted to show yall what I made for the gals... okay, I do not feed my chickens chicken but this is made with the drippings from baked chicken.. so the chicken juices and fat.. if you think it’s the same you can tell me.. I’m not sure... anyway, I saw this in a magazine.. you take the fat from whatever.. bacon grease would be good.. today I took the juices from a roast and made the same.. and put in scratch and seeds and meal worms and refrigerate.. it got a little messed up as I was trying to dump it from the container it was in.. but it was a hit!
I hope I don’t offend anyone with this ... View attachment 1923996View attachment 1923997View attachment 1923998View attachment 1923999
I mean, I know it’s chicken but can’t decide if it’s the same as them eating chicken meat...

Looks great WhoDat. Yeah, I feel a little "odd" giving my girls anything that might have chicken in it, even scrambled eggs! :gig But it doesn't seem to bother them. They don't know how they taste when they are cooked!

I saw something similar for wild parrots where you use vegetable dripping. The sort you get in blocks to melt in the deep fryer I think. Could you use coconut oil/fat in cold weather?

The reason I got chooks was because of the horrible practice in Australia (possibly worldwide) of shredding. You tip thousands of day-old male chicks into a shredder whilst they are conscious because they have no commercial value. I was mentally fragile at the time I heard this and was very distressed and felt that the only thing I could do was to stop eating commercial eggs, and products with commercial egg in it (it cuts out a lot of cake! :D)

I didn't know this ! Eeeuurgh :sick:mad: Another good reason for having backyard chooks.

Good on ya Lozzy for rescuing those girls. I've planted the same idea in my sister's mind so we may see her here one day!

The closest I could come to ethical consumption of animal protein was to get my own chickens so I know the eggs I get are from contented and happy birds

This is not a small thing. I am certain that I pay way more for any eggs we get from the girls than I would for even cage free eggs at the store. Of course the eggs are a nice gift from them. Don't tell them but I would keep them without the eggs.
;)

Oh, yes. The way I keep buying them treats and building new toys and environmental enrichment for them, it's certainly not cost effective! :lau

Roosting

I accidentally posted this on @Ribh thread. Here it is again for those who don't read both.

Maleficent tried to sleep in her nest last night. We had to move her to the roost. So far this morning she is still on the roost waiting for the coop door to open.

I would think coconut oil would be a good idea.. and the fats are supposed to be good for them.. bacon grease is probably the best.. but I’m sure any would work.. I’ll see how the roast juices work today... and yes, @BY Bob .. winter would be a great time for this.. as we are so hot right now the fat starts to melt quick :th... still 95 during the day :hit.. in OCTOBER!! Come on, man!!!

Hi there,
Just a two week old member of backyardchickens.com, I finally caught up to the end of your thread here, BY Bob, and of course it was the Fluffy Butt title that pulled me in. Just want to let you know it's so great to see how you have a mini-community within a community, and you have my total admiration for being such an amazing caretaker of your flock. Jabber, Patsy, Hattie, Mel...I almost feel like I have met them myself. My sympathies on your losses and my heartfelt warm wishes to your family, who all have had quite an eventful year. Anyway, I just wanted to drop in, say hello and stop being a lurking presence!

Carolyn (I'm so new I don't even know how to post those cute emoticons)

Press on that & you will get a drop down with all the rest of the emoticons. It happens underneath the reply box & can be hard to see.
