How successful are your cavity searches? I’m wondering if I’d done one on Penny after three days she’d still be with us...

Well, either I’m not successful, overreacting, or somehow helping things move along... I’m honestly not sure which. Twice now I’ve checked for egg binding, but not found any signs. Dealing with a prolapse was enough to get me over my concerns at checking fairly quickly.

As to Flystrike, dingle berries, and poopy bottoms... Baths, blow dryers, and scissors are the tools of choice. For some of the rehab girls like Puffy with her ascites, baths were just a part of the routine for a while. I just had to cutoff a nasty dag from one of the 7/8 week olds. Two of them are on my cull list, as they are tail-less and and that effects pooping a lot apparently

I don't want to scare you but poo build up on the fluffy butt can lead to flies. Flystike may be rare but is real and deadly. It does extensive damage to livestock in Australia and New Zealand (mostly sheep) in particular and is most common in warm climates.

Flystrike is where the larvae of the blowfly hatch in feces stuck to a chicken's butt or in an open wound and begin to feed on the skin tissue of the chicken.

They will eventually burrow into the body and start eating the chicken from the inside out. They can tunnel through the skin and organs and will eventually kill the chicken.

Not to mention the flies can transmit salmonella among other diseases.

This is why I like to keep the butts clean. It's not common here but why take the risk.

I just discovered something today; seemingly clean and innocent fluffy butts can hide yucky feathers underneath! Just finished snipping back butt feathers by lamplight but some of that poo is caked on right up to the skin... I see chook baths in the not-too-distant future... Not sure what Charlie is going to think of that!
