So funny. A few pages back @Shadrach you mentioned that if they were your hens and you were in different circumstances you would care for them differently. I am really curious what you would do differently. I don't know about others on this thread but I read your posts with a fair bit of envy about how your hens live so I was struck that you would want to do things differently. Hope you don't think I am prying.
Wait...they are not Shadrach's hens?

Maybe I misunderstood. Now I have to go back and find the post! @Shadrach apologies if I got the wrong end of the stick.

Mr Shad is a chicken tender to a wealthy troll. Im betting he would spend more on health care things and although he liked them free ranged predator proofing. Be it fencing off acerage or whatever he could come up with.

Shadrach manages the chickens the way he does mainly through lack of options.:)
If they were my chickens and on my land I would be doing it differently. This is just the best I could come up with in the circumstances.
I lose an awful lot of chickens.:( It's got better in many respects over the years but the other keen chicken keepers that free range here don't lose as many.
They have the right breeds for the environment and sometimes three or four generations of knowledge to draw from.
What makes an enormous difference, the guy who keeps the Fayoumies is a good example, is they have a 'bullet proof' outer perimeter fence.
A couple have lots of acres and have fenced a couple of acres to keep their dogs in and ground predators out.
Phew - I thought maybe I had made it up in my head. This is the post I was responding to. I really respect the knowledge @Shadrach has about chickens so would love to know what he would do differently so I can learn from it.

The girls thought it was “Take your chicken to work day” today!

She's beautiful! I thought Barnevelders were a dark red/brown though? Or do they come in different colours like many breeds?
I think she is correct color .. from online pics I’ve seen.. I believe they are all the same color wise... but my EE Poppy is my true black and gold.. she is my “who dat chick” ;)...
