Here in the UK M&S is considered one of the more affluent grocery shops and they like to offer niche and more high end items. All commercial eggs over here are a light brown/tan colour, so anything deeper brown, white or coloured would be considered quite fancy at best, and viewed with suspicion at worst!
When I give my eggs away to neighbours and colleagues, the first time they see them they are always surprised "Oohh, what lovely colours!" to which I smile and nod whilst internally cursing my Charlie for her non-blue eggs :rant

I always liked a bit of M&S sushi. :D

Be kind to yourself Bob, we all make genuine mistakes and in my book that is understandable and forgivable. Ignorance and neglect is not, and no one could ever accuse you of those.
That is very nice of you to say. I am trying my best. I do really hope to go on a little run here and get through this year with no losses. It feels like the last two years or so have had too many bad things happen.

Bob, I came across this nice portrait I took of your favourite of my girls and wanted to share. 🤗

The Difference Between 4 and 5 is More than 1

I commented before that Sansa has clearly moved ahead of Sydney in the pecking order to the number 4 position. Recently I have noticed that position #4 carries benefits in the flock far beyond position #5.

I think this relates back to my theory that flock members tend to pair up and work well in even numbers. I believe the flock may be extending benefits to Sansa because she is the 4th hen.

For Example
  • Corn Sharing: Sansa is permitted to eat from my hand at the same time as Lilly, Sydney gets the eye and has to leave
  • Roosting Time: While both Sansa and Sydney are subject to roosting time restrictions, Sansa is generally allowed in while Sydney is forced to submit every night.
  • Treats: If I put treats down on the deck, Sansa is allowed to participate, Sydney (along with Phyllis) is subject to being run off
  • The Garden: Apparently the garden only holds 4 hens. Sydney is not allowed in with the others. Her and Phyllis have to watch the other 4 enjoy themselves from outside the garden box. Even with all the free space. Check out the photo.

Apparently Sansa is now part of the popular clique. Sydney and Phyllis, not so much.

I'm right there with you! I wish for many years of good health and no deaths! I've lost four in less than three years, I'm starting to think I'm a terrible chook-mum! :(
