Thanks for your help Michelle. :hugs I managed to pick her up before but I don’t know what I’m feeling for. I hope I didn’t squish her, I was being quite firm. :( Her poo from last night looks normal, she was eating quite voraciously and has been drinking too. My friend suggested yoghurt in the morning. If her crop is full in the morning, do I cage her and let her fast, after giving her thrush cream? What about apple cider vinegar in the water?
Don’t worry, you would know if he aspirated her. If her crop is sour, but not impacted, I personally would not withhold food. She needs the nutrition. I don’t think yogurt by itself will do much, but a little bit probably wouldn’t hurt, plus other foods that don’t feed yeast like meat and kale. Apple cider vinegar by itself won’t do much, either. Did I already mention poultry grade acidified copper sulfate in her drinking water? That only works if it is her only source of drinking water and if you want to separator. But I hear it can be quite effective. I need to find my notes on how long I treated with yeast cream in the past. I feel like it was a pretty long course, maybe seven days? I’ll let you know.
Is she drinking excessively? That could be a sign of an impacted crop. However, the real test is if it empties fully overnight. And if not, you’ll need to tell us what the texture of her crop is like (hard, doughy/pliable, soft/squishy/water-balloon-like).

Help please

River was making a funny noise this morning, almost yipping like a small dog. I watched her carefully and she came and had some breakfast and seemed her normal self, plus she also made her normal vocalisations. She came down to the run to check out the food I’d put in the feeder and I only just by chance noticed that when she bent down, brown liquid came out of her beak. The last time I saw that, my hen died. Can I have some advice please? She’s really skittish and hard to catch, plus I have no knowledge of sour crop or impacted crop. I can’t believe I might have to make another trip to the vet and I’m starting to wonder if I can continue to keep chickens. I don’t know what to do. :hit
Please post this in the ER section. There are folks there waiting to help out. :hugs

Found my thread on crop issues. Actually, it sounds like both plain yogurt and ACV can help per Two Crows. And the meds should go 5-7 days past an empty crop. If you have time, you can read all about me stumbling my way through Ruby’s crop issue and finally finding a solution that worked, with guidance from our resident crop experts.

Thanks Michelle, I will read all the way through it. :hugs

Stalking the Cheese

On Easter Mrs BY Bob brought out a platter of cheese and grapes for us to share under the magnolia. Hattie knew right away that there was good food available but she never said a word.

First she tried sneaking up on the side. Luckily i noticed her and I actually moved my coffee cup to block her access to the cheese.

Seeing that I had seen her, she then moved around to the back. Sad for her she could not reach anything from the back.

So she decided on the direct approach, came around the front, and stared at us until we shared. Which we gladly did. :love

She told no one else what was going on. It was our secret. ;)
I love that bird Bob! I'm not sure she would be able to sneak anywhere given her size.

I've never tried mine on cheese; my cats on the other hat go mad for it.

I've just agreed to give Knocks 3 young ones away to a young man I know who lives a bit further up the mountain.
I've had a few inquiries from people over the past few weeks looking for chickens. I can only keep so many, so when someone comes along who I believe will take good care of them, it's a wonderful opportunity.
I've known this young man for a number of years. His family are circus people. They will live in a run but the run is 10 metres by 5 metres and it's hawk proof. He is going to take over from his father in training the chickens for the circus. Their last rooster died a few months ago at 9 years old.
I'm typing up the history for these three along with picture of their mum, grandmother and great grandmother plus all the dads of course.
There is something hilarious about the idea of circus chickens! Do you know what their performance entails?
Maybe Bob's Lilly has a second calling and she could have an act where she rides ducks with Rossini's William Tell Overture as her backing track?!
