Big (small) changes coming to the Chicken Palace
I hesitate to post this here because I do not want to detract from the count down to Sydney's hatch - honestly I am possibly more anxious about it than even @BY Bob himself!
But I have to post here because, people, this is all your fault.
You are enablers!
You could have said how lovely it is that the Princesses have so much space in the Chicken Palace. You could have said that three is plenty for a flock. You could have said that baby chicks are a real handful and I should avoid them at all costs.
But no, instead you said things like 'looks like you have plenty of room for more' and '3 isn't a real flock'.
And because of that I have ended up with these insanely adorable, cute little fluffy butts.
I am terrified (what if I can't keep them alive and healthy?). But I am already besotted. So thank you all for your enabling.
I will try to get better pictures but honestly they have little jet-skis attached to them and they take off in all directions at great speed and are very hard to corner until they go in under their hot cave which is where most of these pictures are from.

Gorgeous little babies! I like the face-butt photo :gig

Day 10: A Long Time Off the Nest

It was cooler today so Sydney was out much later. She came off the nest at 11:39 when the coop temp was 71.8° F (23° C) She stayed out longer today almost 45 minutes.

Today's video is some slo-motion eating.

Awww yum yum yum corn in the tum!

Hesitantly I tell you BOB, my Rhode Island Red 3.5 yrs old, had sour crop this AM. I tried to help drain the mass of stinky fluid. I carefully massaged her crop, tilted her body down, and she let out a lot (3/4 cup) but stopped breathing. choking, and died right in my arms. I buried her this morning, before church. Jaffar is weak, but he ran with the ladies half a day. But He's weak still, and when it turned very windy here, I took him inside. He's here with me right now.
And Rocket, didn't return to eat or drink today with the rest of the flock. That's my sad story!
I'm so sorry. I can't imagine holding her while she passed like that. It must have been very traumatic. :hugs :hugs

I'm sure rocket is just on her nest. You may have missed her coming to eat and drink. Could you follow her back to the nest next time so you know where it is?

I'm glad to here Jaffar is still fighting. I know this is a lot to deal with. You are doing your best. That is all any of us can do. :hugs:hugs

Let's just say, it has been a very emotional day for me.:th

It's just nice to know that I have caring friends here on BYC! That does help a lot! Thanks.

You can always tell us what you are dealing with. Don't ever feel you can't.
It only seems I haven't had any luck with my flock lately. 6 birds gone in 3 months. Raising them over these years took patience, strength and a lot of loving. I feel as if I lose part of myself when I lose any of my beloved pets.
