Must be a two-cat evening.

Boarded Up

I boarded off the end of the porch to keep things under control for a couple of days. The black chick is lightning fast. I had trouble catching it tonight.

I think this will let the big ladies out and keep the chicks in until they are a little older. I will feel better that they are safe. I watched the black one fall off the porch trying to get down when it missed the ramp. I also watched Phyllis nearly step on them. I'd like to provide a little separation for everyone for a bit.

My guess, that will hold them just about a week!

They will learn at an incredible rate. The more exposure they have to the other hens and their environment, the better adjusted they will become. They learn very fast to avoid the grumpier adults. As you've noticed, they're very quick. Chicks here are out with their mums, roaming around the land at two to three days old.
When do you think it’s better to integrate.. when they are little or when they are older and can defend themselves better...? I’m starting to wonder if younger is better as they are not a threat in any way... I have them in the coop now in their safe space.... only the bullies seem interested!

When I did chicks last I had them out in the run so the others could know and see them but I did not let them "hang" together until the chicks were older and better at getting away, etc.
