But totally the best time to be designing and planning!!!
Exactly! There are questions to be answered.
  • How big would I want it to be?
  • How high up?
  • Ramp or steps?
  • What kind of automated door?
  • Do I include Nest Boxes?
  • Do I include a location for food and water?
  • How would I get electricity there to heat water if I included space for water?
  • What kind of window would I use? (it would have to include a window)
  • How many hens should I build it for?
  • How would I do ventilation?
  • What else am I forgetting?
All of these lead to design. Of course the big questions is, do I really want to do this?

🤔

Making Plans

I was out in the run today and a more simple expansion idea came to me. It seems silly that I have never considered it. More so even if you know where I put the temporary coop every time I integrate. Why not a raised coop in the run? I can keep all of the run space by elevating the coop just like the main coop is elevated and build an additional coop onto the studs I already have out there. I already did that with the outside nesting box. Plus I lose no more square footage from the yard.

Maybe house legbars and polish out there as they are both smaller breeds. I could put Phyllis in charge of them.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm 🤔🤔🤔🤔

I love this idea, Bob! I think Sydney and Phyllis agree.

Alex, I think it might be time to consider an incubator... the Covid panic hen and chicken purchasing frenzy here is mostly over, but we are still in short supply for availability due to time of year.
This is actually a very good idea. I bet we could talk @CrazyChookChookLady into sending you some of Stanley's amazing eggs. She must still have a couple around.

Of course you really want to do this! More chickens...:lau

I cannot believe that I can’t find any replacement birds in this Central Valley CA. Hens are being hoarded (I’m down to three hens, and two Roos). Not good
Alex, would you consider phasing out hens over time (once they pass on their own, of course) and keeping roosters only? It seems there are always roosters in need of good homes. But if you were keeping several, I think there cannot be ladies involved. Unless it’s a full free-range situation with seperate coops, like Shad has.
