Good morning. It’s 6:16 and Ester is about to get her first meal. This girl’s feathers are coming in, but they still aren’t long enough to cover skin and she’s not drinking on her own yet and is barely eating anything on her own (only very specific treats... I do keep offering feed... wet, dry, fermented). Thus tube feed is sustaining her for now. I wish her feathers would hurry up so I could let her have some outside time, but on Saturday she just self isolated in the coop shivering when we tried. Did you guys see how naked she got?

Here she is with me after a feeding on Monday with something in her crop!

Look how full that crop is! You are doing a great job. 👍

I find it a bit worrying that she isn't drinking for herself too. Could it be that she just isn't thirsty because there's enough liquid in the tube feed? 🤞

Well cross your fingers everyone, I've got the incubator up and running. If it continues to maintain its temp and humidity readings I will add eggs around 9ish tonight. 6 Marans eggs from Holly x Drumstick and 4 Maran mix eggs from Butter x Drumstick. It is a bit sooner then I originally planned to set the first round of eggs, but I've never used a incubator before and this is my trial run. I've gotten requests from 3 different local people who are serious about wanting Maran chicks so I've got to get this figured out. It will be nice if my birds can start contributing to their feed bill.
Good luck! :fl:fl:fl

Ok catchup tonight... this is a quick coffee post before I head down to “help with the tree”. 4 hrs and they haven’t gotten fully through it yet. I have a vet appointment for Roostie, 5 phone calls and a good degree of begging later. Scheduled for Monday the 11th, and let’s just say I might not get the phone bill paid this month and I’m going to be advertising my eggs very soon... fingers crossed this vet is a great one, and not some speciesist “just a chicken” sort. Thank you @ChicoryBlue, after the 2018 Corridor debacle and the Duncan Vet that will see livestock but won’t make an appointment and is never available I had given up hope. 💕💕

What a beauty! Will you have a fireplace in your new house Kris? It doesn't look as if you will be lacking in firewood.

Sounds like you have lots on your plate (as usual). Thanks for finding time to update us. I always look forward to hearing from you and see how you are going.

Panic this evening! Hens and BLU went into the coop. But no Jaffar. I heard a panic chicken noise out by the front gate. Saw a stray dog in my yard. I searched everywhere for my roo, and found him cowering deep inside an overgrown willow. Jaffar is safe, no physical signs of injury.
He is shaken up though. Tomorrow will be a day of finding and reinforcing my perimeter fencing! :old :fl:mad::eek:
That's scary! Thank goodness Jaffar is OK. :hugs

I found more than a vet, and the giant tree... baby goat! I am a sucker. Not sure who is less impressed Bullet or DH.View attachment 2479114
Not candy... definitely a very bad idea... my cats are not impressed. I need a bottle. DH is very, very not impressed. She can jump, has already piddled on a blankie, and if mama would show up I will happily return her. Doesn’t like blue glove improvised nipples, is trying to chew everything. I am NOT cut out for this... I don’t do sheep even
You are the best kind of sucker Kris.🤗

Where did you find her? Is she one of the ferals?

Jaffar is in with me tonight, (Tonight, i don't care who knows this) he’s got his own perch and I just want him near me, so I can keep a lookout for internal injuries. He is moving slower than usual

@Kris5902 how did you get on at the vet?
Ask me on Tuesday? So I called the ritzy vet that @ChicoryBlue found. Chickens are fairly new to their practice. It was looking promising until the “and have we seen your chicken before?” Question. So, they aren’t accepting any new patients, it’s a closed practice, and the receptionist boy almost hung up... “please, it’s a matter of life and death for this rooster right now? He’s a very sweet guy, and I really love him. Do you maybe have any other vets that you know will consider treating poultry?” It took him mere seconds on hold to get me a very short list, and no, the offices don’t advertise as chicken friendly... 5 more vets that might see chickens. I think the list was very ‘on hand’ as I said, finding a vet has been a big issue for me. I started at the top and the very last office I called will see Roostie. My very “pet” chicken. On Monday 11am. Fingers crossed until then.

Yes, I think so. I’m a bit concerned about that, too, but she’s starting to nibble a little here and there, so hopefully drinking is next.

Oh goodness, Alex! I’m so glad Jaffar is OK!
