Fayoumis are not cold tolerant at all. Beautiful though. Are there any cold-tolerant breeds you like that are healthy and long-lived?

It's not so much the breed, it's the breeding.
The original roosters and hens and their descendants are used over and over again by everyone who can make a buck by breeding them. Very few of the breeders know what they are doing or care.
The heritage birds are bred to look a particular way and that's about it.
They say here that you get far better stock if you let the chickens decide who they breed with.
I won't bang on about it because for many there is no solution that is affordable.
Most are limited to what is available and that's it, unless one puts in perhaps months of research and travel to the place of origin. Just not possible for most in the USA and AUS.
Read some of the stuff by chickencanoe. He's trying to come to Catalonia to get new blood for his breeds which come from here.

I think he's had a busy day. He came home early, ate some supper and got on the roost bar of the nest box. Next time I looked over at him his head was under his wing and he was fast asleep.

Cynthia, have you ever tried meally worms on vanilla ice cream? Quite tasty! Kidding. But that’s what I tell Walmart, when I buy them!

So, have you ever bought the real live, wriggly meal worms for your chickens? . Some folks only buy the fresh.

Positive update on my overnight guest. While no one came fourth to claim him my neighbor about a mile from me who also has chickens volunteered to take him. She is better set up to isolate him as none of her chickens free range and has a isolation coop already built. We looked him over closely today and something for sure got ahold of him to rip out his tail feathers and he has a open wound on his tail bone. All I had on hand was vetrocyn which I sprayed on it. She's taking him to the vet tomorrow to get it properly checked and some antibiotic if needed. If a owner is found she'll turn him over, if not he's a new permanent resident of her flock. He looked much better this morning after a good nights rest and food and water, his comb color was much improved and he really wanted out of the cage to mingle with my chickens, I just couldn't take the risk.
