Fat Bird has been to see Gloria and Fat Bird has a very small swelling on her spine. There is a tiny cut on her skin above where the swelling is. Gloria thinks Fat Bird has damaged a nerve in this area. There is nothing she can do. Gloria has given me a course of anti inflamatory injections to give Fat Bird for the next week and we will see if that helps. In the long term it is unlikely that the nerve will repair. In the short term it's a matter of keeping her comfortable, although Gloria doesn't think Fat Bird is in much pain.
Fat Bird has also lost a lot of weight.
Fat Bird made her own way up to the coop tonight. She was on the coop floor when I went to check. I placed her on a perch and this time her toes curled more than recently and she stayed on. The past couple of nights I've had to help her arrange her toes for proper balance.

How she got such an injury is a puzzle. It is possible that she has gone under something and got stuck or gone upright suddenly but....

The poor girl. That is such an odd injury. I'm glad to hear that she not in much pain. Any thought to trying to put some weight back on her?

So many horror stories about stray dogs. So sad.

I am not a dog lover. We had someone's mutt in our yard yesterday too. They don't even live round here & were just letting their idiot mutt roam. The man scared the dog off & we caught up with the owners as they were leaving & informed them they needed to keep their dog leashed & out of our yard as we had chickens & he was lining them up. We were very nice & polite because nothing happened but my girls were in their own yard & out of sight of the road & their dog was roaming all through our property. Why do dog owners always think their mutt is welcome everywhere?! Our neighbour's dog is wonderful but not only do I not do dogs, I don't want anyone else's either.

I'm trying to recall when she laid her last egg. Was it a couple of months ago? Or as far back as November?

Maybe further back than November. Let me see if I can figure it out.

I'm a dog lover and have 2. A Golden Retriever and a Lab/Malamute mix. But they do not roam, are trained are not left outside 24/7. What I hate is stray dogs or dogs that owners think is fine to let roam wherever they want. A border collie up the road is a fine example, and on my hit list. They live about 3 miles up but he is down to visit several times a week. He got ahold of Toothless last summer and only ripped out tail feather's but he was marched up the road with bag of tail feathers and warned. He also chases the horses when they are being ridden. The owners have saw it, and do nothing about it. In fact, if he's tied up when they ride up the road you can bet when they come back down he's loose. You can bet when the right time happens, the 3 S's will be employed.

I do not understand why dog owners just think their dog can wander on someone else's property. It's so inconsiderate AT BEST........and.........TRAGIC AT WORST.

Dog owners make me so angry! So many of them fail to train & let their animal roam & they do waaay more damage to our wildlife than cats do ~ though cats get all the blame. They're as bad as irresponsible parents who excuse their child's bad behaviour& make no attempt to correct them. Sorry. I'll get off my soap box now.

I assume that this is good news? Are you glad to have placed all 4?

Well when they hatched didn't plan on keeping them or the other group. It was to test out my abilities to work the incubator. So they had been listed for sale. It is good news because I was getting way to attached to them, but know I do not need any more roosters. And this 2nd group is also rooster heavy, 3 if not 4 are boys. If momma hen successfully hatches, I will let her hang onto them as long as she wants, normally at least 3 months most times 4, and go from there. If the butter egg hatches and is a girl, it will have to stay. I also gave her clover and granny eggs, I may or may not hang onto a girl from one of them. But any and all boys will be for sale. What is torture at the moment, is right now i have 30 Marans eggs held back, all under 10 days old and been rotated daily. And a empty incubator. I keep telling myself wait until the current one's go before filling it again. But, if I wanted Easter chicks I think i need to set them March 13. Which is coming up very soon.
