Not hurt from falls..tough guy..;)... but his poor legs hurt. Probably his prostate cancer, if not that, then his Alzheimer's is causing the pain. Going for x-rays on Tues. We're good. We have our youngest son and wife..and little guy, moved in to help..me..us. Soo.. thankful they are here! Chicken tax from the past! A good hatch. View attachment 2576382
So glad to hear that your family is rallying round.❤️

I'm the same, except Im watching behaviour instead of doing physical inspections because the hens are still too resistant to being handled and I'd rather not stress them. But in photos, the only things that can be seen are colours and shapes.
Oh, my girls won't let me pick them up either. Even Alice is getting wise to me. I have to do my inspections from a respectful distance and stare at their feet sharply as they walk away. 🔭🧐

The Softshell Egg Fairy has Arrived Here

Two days this week with messed up nests. This time Hattie found it for me. I posted earlier about Lilly taking up the prime nest box again. Hattie then wound up in box the which puzzled me. Especially after watching it all go down.

Lilly is on the nest in box 1. Hattie arrives. She sees Lilly in box 1 so she goes to box 2 and starts at it for several minutes, but does not enter it. I took a photo of it.

I thought the behavior was odd. Normally if box 1 is full they just use box 2. She did not so right away I thought something was going to happen.

Would it be 2 hens in one box?

Would Hattie root Lilly out?

What ever was to happened, I needed it on film. So I started the camera recording.

What happened was a stare down. Hattie moved to box 1 and stared at Lilly. Watch! It's uber exciting!

You will note that an unsuccessful stare down makes Hattie peckish. But then doesn't everything. 🤣

The best boxes are not available. Does Hattie stand there and scream until the RRR comes and fixes everything just to her like as Sydney does? Watch for yourself.

If only she could teach Sydney that there is a third box in the coop!

Here is the softshelled egg in nest box 2.

I discovered it when I went out to ascertain if Lilly had laid, no, and just what the issue with nest box 2 might have been.

I scooped the egg out, tossed it on the ground. Phyllis got it first but then Aurora stole it from her. It was weird watching Aurora running through the yard with an egg in her beak.

I am pretty certain that the softshell came from 1 of these two.

I will turn on the nest cam tomorrow to try and find out who. Hopefully this is just a one off. Someone hit the oyster shell hard today.
Riveting Bob! Just like "Days of Our Lives" :gig

Hattie's fluffy butt looked almost too big to fit through the entrance of nest box 3. She looked very content once she settled though.

Soft eggs always concern me. Dorothy laid them off the roost the past two nights.

It is Caturday early morning and she has taken over my pillow.
