Land Reclamation Project

Over the years I allowed the brush pile to grow and get out of control. It took over portions of the side yard that previously had grass present. Last summer I made a promise to Mrs BY Bob to reclaim that land. In the fall I went on a burning binge and shrunk the brush pile significantly.

Yesterday I set about reclaiming the first strip of grass. Of course as I prepared the ground to accept the seeds, the ladies wanted in. There were some depressions in the yard made by who knows what so I dug up an area and then allowed the ladies to smooth out out for me (I love free labor) as I put up my tribe access denier (temporary fence).

I left a passage for them on the back side of the fencing between it and the brush pile for the ladies to get to the apple trees while remaining under cover. So far they have respected the fence.

Do you grow your grass from seed under the straw? And it grows through? I’d like to seed some areas this year, but last time my girls got fat snd I’ll have to fence it off. Straw would be great for keeping wild birds off the seed, but since it’s often used for mulch, did not know it could be used over seed. Too cool!

And holy smokes, those purple flowers are real? Gorgeous! Remind me which chicken they are in honor/memory of?

Same here, monthly it’s nearly a grand more than our mortgage repayments. Much bigger property though so that’s a factor also!
Yes, it’s monthly. Yard is big and wild and I love it. House is run down and infested with termites. And there is at least one rat in the walls.

I have been installing two raised garden beds for the last few days. Today I was shoveling compost into the first one.

The girls came to investigate.
There are 3 birds in this photo. Can you find them all?

Deana spent most of her time checking out the remains of the compost heap.

Fabulous shots! And love the raised beds. I’m in a hodge lodge of barrels and plastic pots. LOL.
