What was holly hiding you might wonder. Over the weekend her chicks started hatching. She has 7, 1 of her own and 6 black silkies. The little marans chick is 24 hours older then its silkie siblings but is twice their size, they are so tiny.

We are frying here. Heat index over 100°F for 3 straight days now. Everything is wilting.

So strange. In California (where I am, north of Alex), it's so unseasonably cold my tomato plants are suffering. Awesome for chickens, but sucky for tomatoes. Tonight after work I changed into sweats, my nuclear hot Columbia puffer jacket and wool socks, and was perfectly comfortable outside. Crazy.

I'm sorry to hear that lucky has not perked up yet. I would expect it to be about 3 days until the antibiotics make a difference. That is what I've seen.

Thanks, Bob. Poor girl. I hope the doxy helps. I did notice a bloated abdomen tonight, which is a concern, and she's not eating much at all.

Clever, Adaptable, Phyllis

We all saw Phyllis issues trying to lay her egg in the prime nest. Phyllis has always preferred to lay her eggs in the yard. Well I caught her coming out of this old planter which we have on the deck. Yes, that is an old cookie sheet that somehow found its way over the end of the planter.

What did I find when I looked inside?

I removed the eggs and placed a white ceramic one in their place. If she is clever enough to find this spot and gain herself some peace while laying, who am I to take it away from her. As long as I know to check there for her eggs.

Such a clever girl! It looks pretty protected too.
Is she the only one using it do you think?

Maggie is limping badly today.
I happened to get coop cam footage of her coming down from the roost but she used the ladder so I don’t think she landed too hard.
I tried to examine her foot for cuts but couldn’t see anything. Mind you, she wasn’t super cooperative with that process so I am not sure.
I will try a footpath later and see if I can get to look when it gets dark.
She is getting around limping and nobody is bothering her so I am taking a watch and see approach.
Poor Maggie.

Oh dear, she is in the wars. Hopefully it is just bruised.
