Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

So, since I haven't really introduced myself (and I'm still playing catch up. Currently on page 2036),I thought I'd share a couple of pictures of my flock to properly say Hi.

Lavender Brown and Luna, my lavender orps:

Scarlett and Ruby the RIRs, Princess Peach and Buffy the buff orps, and three black Australorps, Xena, Callisto, and Maleficent (my mom calls them the three witches because they were super mean to the littles). Bonus addition of my elderly Sheltie, Fred, who was watching over them for me:

Bob is the guy that created this place and on occasions we let him be the leader when he's a good boy

Seriously tho, he is magnificent at building coops and has so much good advice plus his blogs here are really informative.

I'll post my fluffy butt shots in a minute, but first I want to post this one. We all know I have several lap chickens and I love that about my birds. But to me the ultimate sign of trust is when one will stretch out and fall asleep in your lap. Drumstick would do that, but none of the others would ever get that comfortable. Until today that is. Nothing and no one will ever replace Drumstick, but this little boy right here is trying his best to mend my broken heart. A silkie of all things. Never again will I think of them as weird or aliens.

I've been a bit concerned about Deana for a few weeks now.
She hasn't laid an egg since October last year (thank goodness, they were way too big) but lately she has been acting like she wants to. Squatting for me, spending time in the nesting boxes throwing straw over her shoulder, that sort of thing.

Today I squirted a bit of personal lubricant up her cloaca in case something needed help coming out. While giving her treats afterwards I noticed that her comb seemed a bit "rough" for want of a better word. The texture puts me in mind of a magnet covered with iron filings. It is usually more the texture of a rubber glove.

Has anyone noticed a comb with this texture before? Does it signify a problem I should be looking into?.

I need to look at my library of comb pictures. I'm not certain if I've seen that before.

So glad to meet you. I just love the name Maleficent. It has special meaning to me. You have some wonderful looking hens!

Well, I just got a phone call I was no longer expecting to get. The blue Marans hens I was supposed to get almost 2 months ago. They will be here tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!
