There a long way to go before I could even think of egg hatching, it's the wrong time of year. As Bob said spring is about the best time.

I don't want to upset this set up here but my neighbour has told me that there is a charity seeking homes for rescue chickens. That's another thing I would love too do, even if it's only two, it would help a couple of creatures too have a bit of life.

The only problem is if amber gets jealous
It would be wonderful if you rescued some hens but be aware they are difficult. You really have to be able to isolate them as they may carry disease, mites, fleas, etc. Additionally they are usually laying hens and will not have long life spans. 5 to 6 years if you are fortunate.

However what a reward. These poor hens have been tortured the first 18 months of their lives. You get a chance to make a real difference and watch them grow and thrive. It will feel so good to give them a great life and blessing will build up in your account.

I recommend you read some of the rescue threads to make sure that you are prepared if you are serious. If you are serious, good for you! :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap

All this talk of brooding is making me reconsider my plans. In the case that one of mine sets this spring, I might let them parent the appenzellers. One of my fears for letting a hen set chickens was that the newborn chicks wouldn't like me. But from the examples from @BY Bob and @RebeccaBoyd , I'm a little more confident in the idea as their hen raised chicks were still friendly with them.
Ned was super friendly. Lucky was also friendly. They used to hang with me all the time. Sweet things they were. I'm reminded of coffee klatch. Thanks Blazinga. Happy memories.
