Heat denatures protein, making it firm. In a pan or oven, by gas or electricity. Microwaves work on the water in foods, agitating it and that heats it up. That heat works on any protein. That's my understanding. Maybe the scientists here could weigh in?
Both conventional cooking and microwave denature proteins - that means breaking up their tertiary and secondary structures. Egg white goes from clear gel to white and more solid as the protein is denatured.
Denaturing protein is a good thing because the body finds it hard to absorb the huge complex molecules of un-denatured protein and they are also more likely to trigger allergies. Denatured or partially denatured proteins are safer and easier to absorb.
All that said, Chicory you are right that microwaves agitate the water and heat the food that way.

Yes it is all digging now. Not very much nibbling on greens. Hazel is going for worms and dirt dwellers, as far as I can tell. When she pulls something out, of course I can see it if it is long and floppy, that's a worm. But a small bug? Eaten before I can see anything.
So interesting!

Mugs for Monday!

Ms. Meatbird in front, Boss Lady Alelle being camera shy behind her, and Whip in the back eagerly awaiting her turn to attack the sunflower head.

That was my thinking too… the thought of building something was exciting but at the same time so many things could not work and it wasn’t going to be much bigger than the prefab I found anyway.
I think the only additions to the hens would be if I lost one, I would get 2 more to make 3 which the prefab would support for living in.
Do the prefab then. I do like them having a run with the coop. You just never know when you might need to keep them contained for a while.

Ok peeps, I have a conundrum that I need input on.
This is the prefab I have now that becoming derelict. I hate it which is why I’m looking to upgrade to the cubby coop idea…

ok, so I’ve just seen this and other than difference in height the living space is roughly the same size as the cubby I was going to purchase.

Now, after I fit a floor, raise it on stumps, add ventilation, windows, nest boxes, and all the other stuff to make the cubby safe and secure for my girls, it will end up costing me at least $100-$150 more than this one.
This is the cubby…

All I’ve bought so far for my project is paint 😂 so…I’m torn.
As I said, I’m not handy with building so I tried to keep my plan simple for a build but for me, that’s a fair chunk of money. And considering what the girls have now the new prefab is a fair but bigger.
They roam each day so the size of the run isn’t worrying me (and at least it is covered unlike now in the run.)
And I could add more roosts in the prefab, and use my paint if I want to hahaha.
Input?

Sorry I haven’t cropped the photos, first day back at work after the holidays so I’m tired 😅
I hope this all makes sense!
With the cubby you will have to create a nesting box or two, and a roost. However, most prefab roosts are rubbish so you might have to make one there as well. I’d probably go for the coop, but it will be cheaply made and fall apart on you after a while. If the cubby is solid, it might be a better option. Sorry, that probably doesn’t help at all!

Great information RC, but do you know “the air velocity speed of an African swallow carrying a coconut”? :lau
