First impression, she's taking care of herself, good. I am less sure about enjoyment, the sounds - that screechy sound, is a needing-wanting-looking type sound, not a happy content sound, is it? But she's coming along!

Yeah, I was wondering if she was calling for Legertha. However, I agree she is coming along! If they were in the wild, they would also deal with loss and eventually move on.

Just checking in to see how you are doing, Bob. My girls are back in the run. I let them back out and they stayed out for a bit and then put themselves back in. Then I heard a Red Shouldered hawk calling, so they must have seen it.

Thanks. Yes, I agree 100% they are Red Shouldered Hawks, based on the calls. One seems to live here at the pond, but maybe the others were migrating. The local has been stalking the girls for a few weeks. We have other hawks that sometimes hang out, as well. Once we had a threesome of hawks I could not identify at the time. They had banding like the Red Shouldered hawks, but looked more blonde and the wings were chunkier and shorter. Almost like mini Red Tail Hawks, except with banding. I'm not sure what that would be. We have Coopers and Sharp Shinned hawks here, as well. It's just the Red Shouldered that call all year round here. I occasionally hear a Red Tail hawk, but rarely see them right here at my house.

Maybe those additional two were coming through and got your resident upset, thus all the calling?

I love this group too and make sure I read all the threads every day so I don’t get too far behind. And whilst we go off on a tangent every so often, be it books or TV shows or sewing, it always comes back to the chickens. I think that shows how much we love our girls and boys and how we support each other in that love. I adore being able to share my girls’ antics with people who are genuinely interested; I would never get this level of interest from work colleagues or family. Thank you Bob for starting this thread and I feel that it was my good fortune having stumbled across it! It was less than 100 pages long when I first found it, but I have read every post and enjoyed being part of this micro-community.

I was wondering the same. As you pointed out, males and females differ in size. I did not see an obvious size difference in today’s visitors. Maybe they were all males?

Male or female, I wish those hawks would get a room, or just move away from town, leaving the chickens alone!

Friends, I am worried about Bob. How much heartbreak can a person take? We love you, Bob. Someone else said that earlier, but I wanted to repeat it.

I also worry about Mrs. BY Bob. She must feel so horrible, but she was trying to do a good thing. Bob, I hope you and Rose are holding each other tight.
