It has poured the rain all day and my yard is a muddy mess. The chickens spent their time in and between the horse stalls. I went out and sat with them all for over 2 hours. The majority of that time involved Branch snuggled up in my lap. He has his own special comb that he enjoys when I brush him with it. When all was said and done there was not a feather out of place.
That sounds lovely.

Lil Bit went to his new home this morning and I couldn't be happier. It turns out I knew her and was good friends with her in high school. But afterwards like many we had drifted apart. Not only did she take Lil Bit, but 1 of the remaining Corona Brothers. He get's to join her dad's golden comet flock of 20. He has 1 6 year old rooster for that flock and wants a young back up boy. She brought her youngest and Lil Bit got to ride home in her lap.
Oh, yay! This is wonderful news!

Hi, everyone. I got back from Mexico last night. I managed to stay up on the thread somewhat while on vacation. Can I share some of my flockservations since hanging out with my girls for a couple hours so far this morning?

As a whole, the flock seems healthy and happy. Molts gave come along nicely and nobody has naked patches at all. In fact, Flo’s feathers are stunning and so soft. If she had melted a couple weeks later, she might have been in trouble, as it did dip below freezing here last night.

Everyone’s body language looks good with the exception of Bridge, who is favoring a leg and has a limp. I am thinking she probably hurt herself jumping down from the roost. I’ve known for some time that I probably need to rethink how I have that set up. Especially now that some of the birds are getting a little older.

They were all desperate for a dust bath when I let them out of the run, so I need to take some of the litter out of the run so they have access to the bare earth. They don’t have a great way to dustbath inside the run and that needs to be fixed ASAP.

Every single one of them seems to be eating in preening with good body language. Bridge’s body language is fine except for that lamp I mentioned it. A couple of them have excessively poopy bums, and I don’t know if that’s because of lack of access to dustbath or if there’s something else going on. I did see some bad looking poop, from at least two of them, and they are not the ones with a poopy bums.

I believe everyone is satisfied with their dustbath, and now there’s a preening party going on. They seem to be enjoying the sunshine and access to all the greens.

There was a single greenish blue egg in the nest box. I don’t know whether it belongs to Sunshine or Flash. So only one bird of eleven is (barely) laying. I hope that’s just because it’s (almost) winter.
All on all this sounds pretty good. Not too bad for while you were gone. I know you were concerned. Maybe now you can relax even better next time you go away.
