Here are a few pictures of Chiquita and Poppy. Neither one owned up to who was the guilty hen that threw their food everywhere.

@Bob, well I had some of my gang out on Mount Poopmore when Pangoo started aggressively growling, I told him hey kiddo it's just Blue Jays, but he was really GROWLING, the hens took to it running back to the barn, Blanche FLEW from the manure pile to the barn door - I was afraid she would land in the water trough .

I looked up and there was a Red Tail Hawk flying around the barn! He saw that hawk way before I saw it and alerted the gang! I made my voice really urgent and hustled the rest and him back to the barn.

Once in the barn I praised him and made a fuss over him; he was such a good boy! Of course now I am really going to have to do that covered run I keep planning.

They are so numerous these days it's hard to believe they needed protecting. I'm so glad you learned the safe way.

I would agree except it is really hard to dress up a cat who isn't a willing participant. Particularly not in anything white that will show the blood stains.

I was told (at church today) that “I will see her again awaiting me on the rainbow bridge”, as I Enter eternity! I barely made it through church today. And I’m the leader of the church this week.

How does it work Bob?

It is a plugged in device. It has a temperature trigger inside. So when the water temp gets to 32°F, 0°C, it starts to warm. It is supposed to always create enough heat to keep the water from freezing. I assume it just pulls more current to create more heat as the temperature drops.

We've used one since the winter of 2014/2015 with the water only freezing once. Of course that was because the circuit breaker had tripped due to snow getting into an outlet elsewhere and shorting it out. We have had temperatures down to -10°F, -23°C.

Glad I was out there to see it all transpire! But now I have a sense of urgency to get a proper run installed at Spring breakup. No more freedom in the paddock anymore I am afraid....
