It looks like a giant brooder plate. That may work really well. Please keep us posted it you decide to use it. I am bookmarking it as I could install it in the ceiling of the cluckle hut and provide better heating if necessary.

Yes they say install 20" to provide warming for underneath the heater.

It doesn't heat the surrounding air, just heats up the object (hen).

If I decide to get it for sure I will give my opinion

Here’s the closest I get to having a “Roostie”. this one is named “Rusty Roostie” the guy who gave it to me, named it that! It’s the only rooster, I’m allowed to have in church.

Ok, so it’s not very long, but here it Is. At least, he tried his best.

So, about 3 years ago, we woke up. Normal day, nothing odd. We had breakfast, and so forth. Well, we were about to get on with our day, when we noticed Roosty outside. We locked the coop, so there was no way he could be outside. So, obviously, we went out to see what happened, only to find 3 big dogs in him. 3 hungry dogs. He literally fought all 3. He survived, no injuries. Sadly, that couldn’t be said for the chickens, as all of them, except 2, died. We even had a broody. Anyways, I’m glad he protected his flock. At least, he tried. Come around last year, this German shepherd- Labrador mix, or whatever it was, broke in our backyard. Roosty, was still alive, and he went into “danger mode”. He sounded the “alarm”. Good thing the chickens were locked up. That dog almost killed our goat . Anyways, I realize this story was more in dog attack as then him. An extra bonus story: There was a little mouse in “his” coop, and he killed it . That’s good, it’s just pretty ironic how he thought it was a big danger. Technically, it could have been, we dint know if it had a disease or not. But I’m glad he killed the mouse

Wow what good little guy! I am so sorry tho he had to be subjected to all that stress and the loss of the others, very tragic.

Dogs around here that run loose get sent packing, neighbours are told when they move into the area if their dogs are caught in my paddocks, if Sally the Dog Killing Pony doesn't do them in then what is left is sent to the SPCA and I do not inform the owner.

Needless to say my neighbours call me all sorts of names, but then I tell them the story of my neighbours 2 rotties that attacked my horse one day when I was out riding, caused almost a $1000 in Vet bills and she lost her Foal she was carrying. I was lucky not to be injured and my young cousin who was riding with me also lucky.

Dog owners just don't seem to understand the seriousness of attacking livestock....

Honestly I can't even imagine that cold!
All the wisdom on BYC says they will be fine as long as they are dry and out of the wind. But shivering isn't a great sign that they are doing OK. Is it just Dorothy? Maybe you bring her and a friend into a garage? Or if it is more I think I would give them some heat just for the worst of it.
Sorry, I am really just thinking aloud for my own situation with Dotty with no feathers and I have put an oil filled radiator into the Chicken Palace for tonight when we go down to about 4F (which I realize must sound balmy to you!).

I have one of those heaters in my office/feedroom, really nice at warming things up! The Hen House stays around the freezing mark at night with them all in there.

But during the day they have the run of the barn which is 30' x 60' so too big to heat

The door is left open to the Hen House as that is where the nest boxes are located. And it is way too small to keep them all penned up in during the day, it's only 4' x 10', only used as a safe place to roost at night.

I just finished mucking out and kept any eye on them, I left the 4 chicks (15 week old now), roosting in the Hen House all fluffed up together. The rest of the gang are hanging out on the round bale preening....

I really feel for livestock in this cold, I know people say oh they are tough they can handle it, and I am sure if they are healthy they can, but I also know when they are not happy and lately they are all grumpy and I know the cold is to show for that.

I'm soo sorry you lost your boy Roostie. I have a huge soft spot for Marans, especially Marans Roosters and he was a beauty. 12+ years is a really long life especially for a Rooster. You did very well by him and you should be proud of the care he received.

Nope. We just got a light coating of snow. What's happening there?

Not too bad. 6" so far and still snowing but beginning to lighten up. They say very high winds and to expect drifting but haven't seen that yet.
The Chicken Palace runs have a light dusting from blowing wind and the ladies have made their attitude clear. They love snow if I shovel it in so they can keep their feet dry. They have no interest in harvesting snow themselves from the wild.
