Poor Penguin. That rooster really did a number on her back. Just as well it's summer here.

I imagine something fairly high in protein would be good for the younger girls if they are still growing and haven't started laying yet. Penguin could probably do with some extra protein as she starts to regrow those feathers. Maybe sardines as treats every now and then?

Yes, I think I'll pick up some grower food as Lottie is 16 weeks and Snowy is 14 weeks. And there's plenty of sardines!

I keep everyone on grower and supplement with oyster shell for calcium. I have all ages and a rooster here so it's easier to do it this way. My egg shells are hard as rocks and everyone looks great (with the exception of those two bratty broody hens ).

New girls!!!

Please welcome our newest family members; three Frizzle bantams (feather-dusters!)

Penguin - a one year-old Pekin/Australorp X hen who needs to regrow her back feathers due to an over-attentive rooster.

Charlotte (Lottie) - a three month-old Australorp X pullet.

Snowflake (Snowy) - a three month-old Sussex X pullet.

Awwwww I too have a frizzle who is white (I guess called splash ? She has black feathers mixed in).

Do you have a bantam rooster for them ?

This is very interesting to me. You have 2, @RoyalChick has 1. I have never heard of any chicken molting in January before. Never. Something is going on but I can't figure what would cause this!

I can only think two reasons 1) supplemental lighting messing with their internal systems, or 2) excessive overcast cloudy weather causing their internal systems to malfunction.

I noted some feathers on the ground in the hen house, it's not my youngsters they finished their adolescent molt - I think it's Blanche she didn't really do a proper molt in the Fall.

I am an exhausted nervous wreck but everyone is alive.
I woke up a few times in the night to check on Dotty via the coop cams and check the temperature and then I had an extra wake-up call when the house alarm went off for reasons I still haven't figured out.
I was ready to leap out of bed and grab her off the roost and tuck her in the cave in the garage. My anxiety was not lessened by finding this post which voiced my exact fear - that I would find her motionless and half frozen on the ground.

Tonight will be a similarly cold night and then it warms up to the 20s for a few days so I can relax a bit.

I did a weigh in with my girls today. Belle was easy but she was still a bit placid from being in the nest box, Snow, as always, put up a struggle
Belle came in at 1.8kg (3.9pound)
Snow was 2.6kg (5.7 pound)

I know @BY Bob you put Phyllis’ weight here recently but can’t find it for the life of me.
Also, has Hattie had a weigh in lately? Curious to see what she is, I imagine she’s about Snow’s size

Now if Belle decides to continue to sit on her non existent eggs for a few weeks I have an idea if she’s dropping any weight

Thanks, now that I have the chickens I am more wary than ever with dogs. I plan on doing a proper covered run for them in the Spring. With dog, coyote, wolf, fox, racoon proof fencing
