🦝Noooooo....NOT the Raccoons,🦝 the ravaging little buggers that kill indiscriminately and only take a bite or two

They may seem cute, but they have an evil gene!!!!
I thought these would be my biggest challenge, but the ones I had around here were mostly content to eat the leftover chicken feed, and never really tried to get into my chicken tractors. I actually think they also kept the mink mostly away. I’m now worrying a bit about my meatbirds this year… definitely going to keep them Oceanside of the trailer and away from the mountain

Those are the perfect occasions. Although I think champaign is in order. Maybe Miller High Life, The Champaign of Beers! 😆 🍾🥂🍻
Ugh… Americans! I’ve heard some people even think Budweiser is an actual beer down there… 😂
Many many many people have told me to kill it. It is illegal to do so here. I probably could get away with it but I just can't bring myself to break the law like that. If it wasn't against the law it would already be dead.
I respect your dedication and responsibility to the laws. But I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to resist the urge to accidentally whack it a few times with a shovel…
I agree! Those are indeed special occasions for something better than Molson Lite 🙂
Yuck… that’s as Bad as my Dad And his Coors light! Lol we have some nice craft beers out here luckily. Oooh I wonder if DH is picking up any of our old Favourites while he’s big smoke side… we used to live less than two blocks away from a little craft brewery with an excellent Red Pilsner and Amber ale…

If you need something 'special' I would suggest Potcheen (Irish whiskey), pure hydrocarbons 😲😆

😂 Jimmy is a little over one year, and although I can’t smell him at all, I have been assured by our company that he indeed does have a certain “fragrance” about him… used to be I could smell the bachelor herds hundreds of feet away, now they can sneak up on me! I want to use the Elastrator but apparently the little donut bands aren’t “adequate” for a more mature guy… I would need to either invest in a fancy $300 foolproof dohickey, or a $50 California bander that I’ve never used before. (If Ardy is pregnant and has a boy he’s getting the little donut treatment right away!)
Oh dear, yes too old for that. Might have to get him fixed by a Vet, or just put up with him...

Oh and we need picks of these fur babies 🤗

You are likely getting the same squall line I am getting, it's huge! Stretching from Canada all the way down into the USA!

What would we do with out chickens and weather to moan about 😁. ?
That is so true. 😆 I'll be complaining about the heat in 5 months!

That is a lot of money whichever way you look at it! Good on you and DH for cutting back to celebratory beer only.
When my Dad turned 80 he declared that he was changing his habits and was going to have bacon for breakfast every morning and beer for lunch every day. He also declared he would have cream every day. On top of berries if I insisted but otherwise ‘neat’ with a spoon from the pot.
And that is exactly what he did for the next 15+ years.
He gave up smoking at 16 when he left school because then he had to start paying for cigarettes himself.
:lau
He was quite a character and I still miss him.
Tax: Baby Roadrunners from the archives. Day two with me and they already understood the importance of showing their fluffy butts.

I love that photo! 🥰

Isn’t it supposed to be Davis’s natural habitat too?
You will start doing what I do and letting them roam when it snows. You can guarantee they will return, you can see where they went, and not much else is out and about.
I think I'm going to harnass train her so she can be out with me in the summer. That's why she wants out, because I am.

It is but Davis started life in a barn. He's not taking a chance on losing his house privileges. 🤣

I like that idea very much. The roosting platform is about 25 inches high here, and I haven't heard any objections from the shop steward though they've never known anything else. Queenie was fine with it, but when she was in the big walk-in run during integration she would eye and go for the highest possible spot she could fly to. Same when she was inside, she would roost on the very top of the brooder, on the 1/8" on-edge fur strip up there, wedged between the fur strip and the ceiling. I would take her off and put her on the highest perch, to keep the poop inside the brooder, cause sometimes she would face in.

Maybe it's proximity to the ceiling / roof they like, it gives them the sense they are as high up as they can go?

The Buckeyes have never been great high beam athletes, nor are they precision jump-flyers. They do aim when they take off, but I think that means they merely have an intended, but general, landing area. Like Evel Knievel 🏍️ they blast off and hope for the best!
The hens at my house also love being up high at night.

The real problem is getting them down again safely, especially those who are heavier and slower, with no hope of flying. In the wild, I guess chickens who break their ankles getting down in the morning are predator snacks the next evening.
