@BY Bob: I said in my last post Luna was my whinger & would often vocalise all day every day ~ often loudly. As you know I have just lost my 2 top hens so the pecking order here has shifted & Luna is now [I'm pretty sure] one of the top 2 & this is what I am observing: Luna is not vocalising anywhere near as much as she was. That is now Aoife's job & she is a much louder, harsher sounding hen. She also constantly scoots around the yard making an almighty racket. Being a Campine I wasn't paying much attention @ first as the Campines are quite mad but it has persisted. Ha'penny or Luna lead the girls to roost but Aoife is usually the last one in & she seems to run round rounding everyone up & screaming @ them. I am wondering if Sydney has taken on the same position Aoife has & this vocalising is part of the job ~ though I am unsure exactly what that job is.
This is very interesting. I need to watch closer to bedtime this week and see if there is any other similar behavior. Keep me posted on what else you see her doing.

Our weather has not been conducive to flock observations recently. However today was dry & I am wondering if Luna & Ha'penny have split the top job. Ha'penny was out & about with all the known foragers. Luna had everyone else sheltering under the greenery. Aoife was doing a lot of screaming. She will drive the neighbourhood nuts if she keeps it up. The Vorwerks do their own thing. Afternoon rest time next door's bantams hang close to the fence where my girls are. They seem to consider themselves part of my lot.

I think it's sweet that they visit with yours. Your lot might be too much for any one hen right now and 1 & 2 may decide it is better to split them and lead different groups periodically. I will be interested to see if they switch who has which group.

Breakfast incident. My Chaco isn’t feeling well. Arizona yelled at me when I picked her up. All around just a taxing day for me. :idunno:(
Awwww I am sorry to hear, some days r just the pits... Which reminds me of an old saying 'life is a bowl of cherries, full of pits'...

Sure hope Chaco is ok I know horses can be trying.

As for Arizona I am sure she knows your tops in her universe - next to Jaffar 💖

Yep. And personality~wise I have very different sorts of hens. My small bantams aren't really designed for foraging but the Vorwerks, Campines & Wyandotte bantams are terrific foragers & will spend most of their day doing that. Soda & Hepzibah ran the flock together but I'm pretty sure they were relying strongly on the mature hens being predator savvy & keeping tabs on each other. The division is much more apparent now but all the fighting that was happening a while back has completely died out. Pretty sure now the girls knew the old order was about to change & were vying for position.
