Yep. And personality~wise I have very different sorts of hens. My small bantams aren't really designed for foraging but the Vorwerks, Campines & Wyandotte bantams are terrific foragers & will spend most of their day doing that. Soda & Hepzibah ran the flock together but I'm pretty sure they were relying strongly on the mature hens being predator savvy & keeping tabs on each other. The division is much more apparent now but all the fighting that was happening a while back has completely died out. Pretty sure now the girls knew the old order was about to change & were vying for position.
Most likely. They are very savvy and prepared themselves for this eventuality. It was always comforting to me that I really saw none of that while Lilly was feeling ill. Either they believed she would be fine or are already prepared by designating Aurora to be next in charge.

I was thinking similar to @Shadrach s tribes when more than one rooster. in the tribe...each had 'their' hens within that tribe that they mated with, escorted, protected........though both 'groups' of hens mingled freely while out and about....it was more who had to 'run' for escort...and/or who had to provide look-out service when the group split into different areas (i.e. dust bathing and foraging) ?No? Not really sure, just pondering out loud.
All of these are possible. I'm still not certain of what the relationships between everyone is. I'm still trying to figure the roosting out. It seems that Betty is spending every other night in each coop.

Crap, I've got a injured hen this morning. I went out to feed breakfast this morning and one of my cochin girls cannot walk. She can stand but when she goes to take a step she falls over on her side. She was perfectly fine last night running around when I put her to bed. She is behaving the way Daisy did over a year ago when she had that monster egg get stuck. I've felt around and can not feel a egg. What I did feel I do not like and as soon as mom gets up I want her to double check. I'm not sure but I think somehow overnight she's dislocated a hip. Right now she is in the hospital crate with food and water and a nest made up. If something is fixable I'm all for rehabbing and giving them time to recover, but, I do not know if a dislocated hip is fixable. Of course it would also be the friendliest of the cochins. The girl who finally decided it was ok to sit in my lap and allow herself to be petted.

:flI'm hoping it is something you can fix. I imagine a dislocated hip could be fixed (like in humans), but how to manipulate it properly??? And then she would need time to strengthen the ligaments/tendons so it doesn't happen again.:fl

:hugs:hugs:hugs

I hope this in rights itself. Maybe you could have a chat with @Shadrach or even Bob may have a suggestion, he was right about Tina's leg. She came out okay within five days
