Hmmm, no puns?I looked everywhere, all my pockets, closets, barns and coop. I just can’t find any puns anywhere. I’m sorry I can’t be punny today.![]()
I dont know how to answer. It is possible that some time in the 1930s a Legbar may have been involved. I don’t know though, and I suspect not.Does that means she is part Welsummer and part Legbar....ohhh, if so, I am part correct tooo!!!
Bernadette aka Birdie is adorable, she will be one smart Lady, being so brave and inquisitive (giving, of course that , 'Momma' aka 'servant' will keep her fairly safe - a daunting task given Birdie's proclivities for finding trouble)
Anyone who ever called chickens 'stupid' needs to see this...they know
Probably, though not definitively, started from the same source of barred bird....though unless we have a written account, or a geneticist on loan, I guess we will never know.I dont know how to answer. The bar in her name just means she has the barred gene - probably from a barred rock originally.
It seems like these folk in Britain working on auto-sexing called the breeds xxxbar to indicate that the breed had the barred gene and was auto-sexing.
Hence Legbar, Welbar, Wybar etc.
There is an article about it. I will look it up when I get a moment later.Probably, though not definitively, started from the same source of barred bird....though unless we have a written account, or a geneticist on loan, I guess we will never know.![]()
Oh, so gorgeous!A formal introduction: Bernadette (aka Birdie)
Birdie is a brave little soul. She was the first to come out from under the heat cave, the first to explore the top of the heat plate, and the first to do acrobatics on the branches. She is a pecker constantly looking out for things to peck at. She has pecked both her sisters and when I put my hand in she pecks my fingers while everyone else shrieks and runs away.
Bernadette means 'brave as a bear' and I think she is as brave as a bear. Maybe even braver than a bear pound forpoundounce.
Birdie is a Welbar. Congratulations - both @rural mouse and @micstrachan win this with their Welsummer guess. Welbars are recognized as a separate breed to Welsummers in Britain, but not in the US. I think they are basically the same, but with Welbars you can tell gender at hatch. I think they are very pretty.
Here she is doing what she does.

That would be GREAT! Aside from sex links with mom barred and dad not, I don't know a lot about genetics and sex linking, so that would be great to learn more. I need to buy that poultry 'bible' everyone raves about. It is quite expensive, though. Maybe next year for Christmas or my B-day, if I give enough hints, I might get it.......There is an article about it. I will look it up when I get a moment later.
Thanks, they r lovely ladies. But alas they r mutts as far as I know. Are they Sapphire gems? They are lovely![]()
I found the Welbar article. Basically they are descended from Welsummers and Barred Rocks. Welsummers are derived from a whole slew of chickens! That would be GREAT!
