It is probably a smidge warmer in their 'tent' than the house in general, and a smidge warmer than that above/around the heater plate (so maybe close to 80?). Plus, there are no drafts at all in your BR, I am sure!
That said, they are active and happy...if they need it, they will go under. Were they just hatched when you got them...or are they more like 1.5 - 2 wks old? i.e. so are they closing in on the 85 degree temp time? They have enough wing feathers to be about 2 weeks old. I wouldn't worry unless they start peeping loudly like they are uncomfortable (like they did when you brought them home) They WILL tell you if something isn't okay!:jumpy❤️:jumpy
They were hatched Monday a week ago - so 12 days old now.
I am sure there are no drafts and you are probably right it is a bit warmer inside the cave. On top of the cave it is maybe 75 - definitely not 85.
Anyway, I am not complaining and nor are they so all is good.
They move to the much cooler garage this weekend.

You forgot shoeing, teeth floating and a tack obsession.
Ugh... Ya thanks for reminding me, I need to get my blacksmith out.

She also has chickens and so we now spend more time chatting about chickens than the horses 🐓🐓🐓🐓

She lovely my grey ladies and wondered if they were "blue Marans" ? I think is what she called them,? Correct me anyone.

I call them mutts but my niece now informs me that they are likely Marans as she got a mix of eggs when she hatched them....

The heat plate still exudes heat and heats the area around it. The wonder of the heat plate is that it enables them to control their temp. Chicks with their mum will come out into air temps below 70 until they chill so much they need to run under mum to warm up. The heat plate mimics that process for them.
Yes, I know, that is why I like it. My puzzlement is that in a room of say 71f they don't ever feel the need to warm up. I have cameras on them - they never go under the plate during the day.

Rosie visited the high school yesterday. She has looked forward to this all year and enjoyed herself. While they were there they went ahead and signed up for their classes for next year and she brought the paper home for me to sign. I was slightly shocked by the classes she chose, but am very proud of her choices. Next year she will have AP English 1 and Biology *needed a teacher's referral to get into this one*. Her Math class will be determined towards the end of the year. She has taken Algebra 1 this year and maintained a 99 to 100 all year and the final week of school she'll take a test to see if she is going to go into Algebra 2 or AP Algebra 2. She wants the AP Algebra. I asked her why she chose the harder classes all on her own. She says if she wants to graduate with the National Honor Society requirements she has to have them, plus they look good on college applications. I love that she is thinking along those lines on her own without any encouragement from me.
Please hug that GIRL for me, it is always wonderful when I see young women taking charge of their lives. Such a lovely young lady you have there.

Also - One of the most marvelous things for me to see are women working in non traditional roles, I have worked with women welders, heavy equipment operator, engineering... i personally worked in IT.... Its just wonderful 🤗

Mine was just out to do all 3 Tuesday, will see him again in 6 weeks. Louis is starting to drop feed so now have to get the vet out to check his teeth. It is about time for a floating, its been 2 years. Had him checked last year when the coggins was pulled and they were still good. What color do you blue girls lay? They look like my Blueberry who is a half marans, but could pass for a full Blue copper Marans.

Well, a lot can happen and change in 4 years time. As of right now, and it has been this way for 2 years she has it in her head that she wants to be a Forensic toxicologist or a Forensic Pathologist. She also has chosen 2 options for colleges. If she goes out of state she wants to go to the University of Georgia. If she stays in state she wants to go to Transylvania University. I've told her all she has to do is keep her grades like they are and try hard and nothing can stop her. Earlier in the year her science teacher was talking about how in college for one of her biology classes they had to dissect a human cadaver. I about hit the floor when she told me she could not wait to get to do that.

Then your environment is perfect for them. I would not give it a second thought. This is really why the heat plate is vastly superior to the heat lamp. Of course neither is as good as a mum.
