I find that the unflitered rain water is just about an acceptable alternative to the muddy puddle and the bowl with rotting leaves in it. Their preferences are clear, but if there is no muddy puddle and I emptied out the bowl then rain water is clearly preferable to my well water.
Even the little babies prefer the rain water to the house water.
I do my best not to be offended.

We have finally come off the Fall boil water advisory, it’s been over a week (maybe they’ve stopped testing it?) but the Farm’s spring water is still yellow as all…. I think there were two or three days back in September between boil water advisories, they do this occasionally so we aren’t on a continuous one for 8-10 months of the year, sounds better when people start publicly complaining about it. I’m sorry municipal government… but the water didn’t go from ā€œunsafeā€ to drinkable for just two days, then back to unsafe again. There was one point they weren’t even recommending people bathe in it. I’ve been buying our Water since October of 2021, or collecting rain water. The chickens prefer puddle and rain, but Arduinna started turning up her nose at the local system water… I wonder why? This is Farm Water vs Bottled, but at one point the system water was even worse than the farm water 🤮

Chicken Tax: I think I saved this one from yesterday just for a morning rant… if it’s a repeat sorry, my connection was cooperating yesterday and I went a little upload happy!

😲 My friend has had his lunch taken of him so I'm not the only one to eat his food 😊

This reminds me of yesterday morning. I have been getting more cracked and dirty eggs than I can eat, so I’ve been sharing with the ravens. Had DH toss them out the living room window for one and he was quite pleased, but clumsy hubby broke a few on the tossing so the chickens were also in a bit of a feeding frenzy. The raven patiently waited for it to die down before snagging the unbroken ones, but a jerk cockerel decided to take issue with him. Poor Raven was taken aback, they are close in size and just slightly smaller than most of my Hens. I’m fairly certain he understood me scolding the jerk though. One day I really hope to have the Ravens to the point where they will take food from me directly. I had crows that would do this at work in the city, but these Ravens are slower to trust me.

Can you filter? Or is that really expensive?

RIP Penguin

I’m really sad to say that Penguin died in the night. She was at the vet hospital and was going to have an X-ray in the morning, but she was having difficulty breathing. So they did one in the night and it looked like she had cancer that had spread to her lungs. She was only around 1 1/2. RIP my sweet sassy miss. :hit

Grumble Grumble

Betty was throwing a fit this morning and it took me a minute to figure out what was happening.

I realized that only Phyllis and Lilly were ranging. Everyone else were laying eggs.

In box #1 we had Aurora
In box #2 we had Hattie
In the Cluckle Hut we had Sydney

So where was Betty to lay her egg?

Maybe nest box #3?

Apparently that was unacceptable.

So she chose to lay her egg here.

That's right.

In a box with Aurora!

And Betty is the one grumbling. Listen to her in this video. You can hear Sydney in the background having laid her egg and celebrating.

Has anyone ever heard a hen do that before. I have not. Even Hattie seems perplexed by the goings on!
Nope, the Buckeyes yell a lot and do a lot of loud moaning and complaining when the nestbox is occupied and even when it's not, they let everyone know they have to go and lay. Butters positively screams from inside the nestbox, once or twice letting a banshee screech out. I've never heard quite this sound before. Hattie looking over the divider is precious! Betty has got gumption, an admirable force of will!

You heard it here first: one day Betty will lead that tribe!
