And last night’s success… this was her third bowl. I think she might poop today

She only bit me three times last night, so she is remembering the hand brings her the tasty things, but usually the first strike into the food isn’t for eating, she’s trying to kill the hand, then realizes it’s full of food and alternates between violent eating and pecking to injure. Sigh, every time…

What vitamins r you giving Bernadette? Is she just not as active or unable to stand or run? My gals all seem ok, is it just youngsters who get like this? Or can older birds also ?

She can’t use her leg normally. She isn’t lethargic but she has trouble walking properly.
Grown chickens can get it too. It is possible that is why Maggie had walking issues a while back - I am not sure - but she wasn’t eating commercial feed at the time so may have been missing out on vitamins.
Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) deficiency is particularly associated with ‘curled toe paralysis’ so I am giving her a lot of that, but I am also giving a more general supplement which has the other B vitamins as well as vitamins A, E, and K.

Thanks appreciate the info. My old gal has weird feet/toes, when she roosts they curl under...I don't see the others toes like that. She gets around ok so I guess she is fine.... But I will see about getting a vit supplement just in case. At her age it can't hurt.

Ugh… with how slowly these pictures are loading I’m dreading logging into YouTube to upload my video. And worse a new “battery saving feature” of the iPhone 12 Pro is not only facial recognition, but it can tell when you zone out and aren’t paying attention to it, even when it can see your face, and it first dims, then locks itself Wild water, we are getting lots of that today. How can this taste better than the clean water in the drinkers? I will give them the puddles, everyone agrees they taste the best, but really? Is it the feed dust? Has it started fermenting, adding extra flavour? Has this chicken just figured out the secret of beer? Then again I have also seen the drinking goat pee so… (note this is not due to a lack of water, or clean drinkers, they all get cleaned weekly and refilled about every two to three days, and they are scattered everywhere) View attachment 3093525

Maggie likes to peck the drips off the hardware cloth. It is the exact same water in the rain barrel but it is apparently more fun if it comes drip at a time while she stands outside getting soaking wet.

As I am working from home today I figured I would let the gals out, as soon as I did a hawk flew overhead circling... Run run run!

Oh they are so dense! No sense of urgency, well the blackbird chased the hawk away, so I let the gals stay out.

Just now the hawk was again flying overhead, this time lower, thankfully the raven chased it off, and that was that. I brought the gals back I side.

Now I have to get a run up this weekend, can't risk hawks, etc...

Only thing I know about chaco’s breeding, is she came from a mustang ranch. She’s not totally (ride ready tame) but she lets me on her back when she feels like it. Basically she is a big puppy/ kitty/barnyard pet all in one.
